Description

PATBNTED APR. 21., 1908.
F. A. STAPLES & L. MULLER.
SASH FASTBNER. APPLICATION mum JULYB, 1907.
IN V/[N TORS FR-nNKh. STAPLES AND LOUIS MoLLne, or SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA;
SASH-FASTENER.
To all whom it may .c'oncer n: Beit known that we, FRANK A. STAPLES and LOUIS MoLLER,-"citizens of the United States, 3 residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Franciscoand State of Galifornia,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sashj-Fasteners, of which the following is a s ecification.
'Our'invention re ates to lmprovements in sash" fasteners and it consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts of, which it is com osed, whereby-the u r and lowersa'shes oi a window can be a us'tedin relation to one another for ventilatinga room, and both locked together at difierentj points, all as will be herein after more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Theanne'xed drawm'gs, to which reference is made, fully illustrate our invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of our sash fastener, showing the-two sashes .closed and lockedtogether. Fig. 2, front'view of thesame. Fig. 3,1sa top or plan view of the boltcasing, and Fig. .4, 1s a face view of the pivoted bar showing the same in .rnodified form.
Referring by letter to the accompanying.
drawings, A designates the up er rail of a lowersashofa window and B, t 1e lower rail' of the upper sash.
C indicates a hollow casing provided with side perforated lugsa, 11, having opening to receive screws, by which said casm is'secured to the upper face of the top rail of the lower sash of a window. This casing is provided with a spring actuated bolt 1), having a vertical in c that enga esa ba onet fasten- I ing slot in the upper iace of t e casing.
D, designatesa bracket, secured to the upper face of the lower rail of the top sash of a window, to which is ivoted, as at e, the lower end of a barE,
said.
It will be observed, in adjusting the sashes in ventilating a room,,that the sashes are held firmly together by the end of the bolt Specification of Letters Patent.

raving recesses f, designed to receive the end g, of the bolt afore- Patented m 1908.
entering one of the recesses in the pivoted bar, the lockin rod forced into said recess by the action of t e coiled spring thereon.
In releasing one sash from the other the sprin actuated bolt is drawn back by its hand e or knob h, and the endthereof is disenga ed fromfithe recess in the bar after which the boltis turned slightly when the pin enga es the offset of the ba onet slotand thus olding the bolt in an 11 ocked position,
' and it will be further seen that by our device red with on the the'fastener can not be tam outside, of the window, an that the barfhcing pivoted the groove i, can not bind or prevent the sashcs from working" smoothly said bar accommodates itself to the ment of the rod oint and sashes.
- In Fig. 4 we s ow the attachment move for the i upper sash in modified form wherein a joirrt device is used instead of the straight bar;
.in the form of a toggle joint; the pivoted arms thereof opening and closing as the sashes are adjusted.
, The application of our device provides means whereby the two sashes may be locked,
whether they are adjusted for ventilation or when both are closed and adcvic'e'as herein described is simple in operation, ornamental, durable and at the same time inexpensive to manufacture.
Having thus described our invention, wnai we claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- :ent is In a sash fastener the combination with the casing, provided with the spring actuated bolt, of the pivoted bar provided with the groove extending from one end to the other end and the recesses in said groove, said bar pivoted at its lower end to thelbracket all as shown and described. i
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence 0 two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK A .-STAPLES. LOUIS MOLLE-R.
