To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS E. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarksburg, in the county of Harrison and State of Nest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in sash fastening devices and relates particularly to that type of window sash fastener in which means are provided for holding either or both of the sashes in an open position, as desired.
The invention has for its primary object a simple, durable and efficient construction of device of this character, the parts of which may be very cheaply manufactured and easily assembled and applied to the sashes of a window frame or casing and which will not be liable to get out of order.
A further object of the invention is an improved construction and arrangementof partsivhereby the spring actuated bolts may be very easily manipulated by the operators fingers so as to retract either one or both of them as desired, to raise or lower either or both sashes to the required point, whereupon the releasing of one or both bolts will permit the springs to act and securely hold the sashes as desired.
A still further object of the invention is a device of this kind in which the spring which is preferably connected to the bolts to move them laterally away from each other, is so formed as to provide convenient finger pieces which may be conveniently grasped by the finger and thumb of the operator when it is desired to raise or lower.

With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of two sashes at the meeting rails thereof and a portlon of a window frame or caslng' showing my improved fastener applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a plan View of the device partly in section.
- Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in both of the views of the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a portion of a window frame or casing, and 2 and 3 designate respectively the lower and upper sashes, movable therein. Secured to the upper side of the meeting rail of the lower sash 2 by screws or similar fastening devices, is a base plate 4 which is provided atone end with a transversely extending'tube or casing l in which two bolts designated 5 and 6 are mounted for movement in a direction transversely of the sash and frame. The bolt 5 is designed for engagement in any one of a longitudinally eX- tending series of openings 7 formed in the a'ngularly disposed flange 8 of an angular keeper strip 9 secured by screws or other fastening devices to the stop bead 10 for the lower sash 2. It will, of course, be understood that these apertures or openings ,7 may be of any desired number and spaced any desired distances apart. The bolt 6 is designed for engagement in any one of a series of apertures 11 formed in a keeper strip 12 secured by screws or the like to the inner side of the sash 3, as clearly illustrated in the drawing, whereby the lower sash may be raised and held at any desired point and the upper sash lowered and held at any deslred point, for the purposes of ventilation or the like.
The bolts 5 and 6 have openings extending therethrough, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, and these openings receive the ends of a spring actuating device 13, said ends eX- tending' into the casing 4. through slots 13 formed therein. This is preferably formed of a single piece of spring wire doubled upon itself at a middle point and secured at such point to the base plate 4t by a screw or stud 14. The arms of the spring member 13 diverge as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 and intermediate of their ends each of them is formed with a coil 15 of any desired number of convolutions, said coils serving as convenient finger pieces whereby either or both of the arms may be moved inwardly or the arms pressed together so as to retract the bolts 5 and 6 from the apertures in their keeper strips 9 and 12.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved window sash fastener will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, after the strips 9 and 12 have been secured in place, and the base plate 41: secured to the upper side of the meeting rail of the lower sash between the strips 9 and 12, it is only necessary to manipulate the arms of the bolt actuating spring member 13 to retract either or both of the bolts 5 and 6 and when either or both of the sashes are moved to the desired point, they may be very readily held in the desired position by releasing the spring member 13 and permitting it to move the bolts outwardly into the apertures 7 and 11.
While the accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangements and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Nhat I claim, is:
1. In a sash fastener, the combination with a window frame and upper and lower sashes movable therein, of a vertically disposed angular keeper strip secured to said frame and provided with an apertured flange on the lower sash, another keeper strip secured to the inner side of the upper sash in a position corresponding to the first named strip, a base plate secured to the upper side of the meeting rail of the lower sash and provided at one end with a transversely disposed casing, independently movable bolts mounted in said casing and engageable with said strips, said bolts being formed with openings extending therethrough, and a spring member secured to the base plate and having its ends extending into the casing and into the openings formed in the bolts, the arms of said spring member being formed intermediate of their ends with coils, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a window sash fastener, the combination with a frame and the upper and lower sashes movable therein, of apertured keeper strips, one of said strips being secured to the frame and the other to the inner side of the upper sash, a. base plate secured to the meeting rail of the lower sash and provided at one end with a transversely extending casing, independently movable bolts mounted in said casing and engageable with said strips, and a spring member se cured to the base plate and extending into the casing and provided with independently movable arms engaging the respective bolts.
