, Application filed August', 1907. Serial No. 387,633. l
To all whom 'it mag/"concern:
Be itkn'own that I, RUSSE-LL BQLAW- BENQ-n, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the `city of New York, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and lin-- proved Fire-Dolor Fastener, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to means for securing a lire door in locked position, sovas to prevent a iirefrom spreading in the interior of a building. When doors of this character-,are subjected to -excessive heat arising from a fire, the doors Warp and shrink transversely of their length, thereby forming an aperture between the edge of the door and its casing orits adjacent door section, and enabling the Haines to spread by passing through said aperture.
This invention has Jfor its object, there fore, to provide means adapted to hold "a lire door against warping or shrinking in Width so as to prevent the tire from spreading beyond said door. v
` Other objects relating to the specific cony several parts constituting my invention Will be understood from the following description an 'accoinpanying drawings, in Which draw-v ing-s like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, and in which l'igure 1 is a perspective view oi a double door provided with my invention g Fig.' 2 is a transverse sectional view or' the meeting edges of the two sections of the door, taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of a part of the device shown in Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a keeper used in carrying out my in- As illustrated in the accompanying dravv-l ings, l and 2 represent the sections of a double door provided with hinges 3, the plates-,of which extend in opposite directions' and arr-:fastened to a door section and casing 4 respectively. The free edge of one .of the door sections is providedfwith an astragal. 5 which overlaps the corresponding edge o the Y opposite door section so as to cover thejoint t between said edges., A carrying bar 6 is'. mounted upon the free edge of one of the door sections, and is adapted to slide inl 'opened guidewa 7 preferably attached to the as` .tragal of the door. 4The carrying bar t3 'is oonnected in any suitable manner with alatch S preferably by means of a loop 9 formed on thel carrying bar which engages the free end 10 of said latch. A latch spindle il o-rother suitable device is connected. with the latch and adapted thereby to move the carrying bar 6 up and down in its guidevvay 7.
Mounted on the carrying ber 6 are latches l?. provided. with apertures 13 adapted to en# gage keepers le secured/to the opposite door section l, or to -a door casing. The keepers le are provided with base plates 15 having ing screws the keepers are secured in their places. The'keepers le are also provided with open-recesses' adapted to .receive the latches land hold the latches and the doors attached thereto against any outward movement.l In addition to preventing any outward movement of the free end of the door section, .the latches 12 bear at their ,outer portion against the side of the keepers and prevent the door shrinking or warping transversely of its length, tlie hinges 3 at the same time holding the'op osite edge of the door against warping orgs rinking in the saine di-y rection.
When .theLdevieewis in. use, the doors are raisirig-. \the carrying bar 6 by means ot the latch SHor'otlierwise, AWhich raisestheflatches 'l2l andreleases the upper' t i portion of the` latches. from engagement with the recesses l7`of the keepers? vThe doors apertures 16, bymeans of which and engag' y are closed iindlocked by a 'reverse or downward movement ofthe vcarrying bar v6 after the doors have 4'been'closed, thereby again bringing lthe upperV .portion the latches l2 into engagement with therecesses 17 vof the kee ersp aving thus described my invention, what .l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
'1. rIhe combination with a rire door, oi' an astragal, a carrying bar having a sliding engagement with said door, latches `.mounted on said bar, and keepers comprising a base plate and an oli-set recessed lip adapted to engage and hold said latches against a strain trans verselv of said door.
