To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HJALMAR WENNER- sTRoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norway, in the county of Dickinson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking and Supporting Means for Suit or Sample Cases; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in looking and supporting means for suit or sample case covers, and has for its object to provide a suit, sample, or

- other case with simple, economical and effiings, the numeral 1 represents cient operating means adapted to be secured in operative position to a suit or other case, and lock the cover in position; as Well as serve as a supporting means for the cover, when open.

With this the other ends in View, that W111 readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts illustrated in the drawing, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a'plan view of a suit or sample case provided with my improved locking and supporting means, the cover closed; Fig. 2 is an end view of a suit or sample case provided with my improved locking and supporting means, the cover open; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the locking disks I employ in carrying out my invention; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the supporting bars I employ in carrying out my invention.

Referring more particularly to the drawan ordinary suit or sample case having the usual body, 2, and cover, 3. The numeral 4 represents two locking disks of iron, steel, or other suitable material, which are riveted or otherwise securely fastened to the outer side edge of said cover, one near each end edge. Each of said locking disks is provided in its periphery, preferably at its part adjacent to the top side of the cover, with a suitable recess, 4, and

with a locking spring, 5, which is securely fastened at one end to the periphery of the locking disk in position to work over said Specification of LettersPatent.

I recess. Each of said locking disks is also i provided with a central, vertical threaded perforation, 6, the purpose of which will be disclosed. The numeral 7 represents two 1 elongated supporting bars, each of which is provided with a longitudinal slot, 8, near one end, and a locking pin, 9, on its under face.

In the application of my invention, said supporting bars are loosely secured in operative position to said locking disks by screws, 10, working through the slots, 8, in said supporting bars and screwing into the threaded perforation 6 of said locking disks. Each of said supporting bars 7 is also rovided at its free end with a suitable head or knob, 11, adapted to engage a locking loo formed integral with, orsecure manner, to a metallic plate, 13, of suitable form, adapted to be riveted or otherwise securely fastened to the outer edge of the body of said suit or sample case, 1, at points opposite said locking disks when said cover is closed.

When it is found desirable to open the cover of the suit or sample case and employ said supportng bars 7 as a means for supporting the cover, the free ends of said supporting bars are swung outwardly until said locking pins 9 thereof reach a point opposite said recesses, 4, in said locking disks, 4, when the locking springs, 5, press said pins into said recesses, and retain said supporting bars in position. It will be apparent that the said pins 9 of said supporting bars are allowed to enter the recesses in said locking disk be cause of the slots 8 thereof.

My invention could be employed very advantageously in connection with sample suit cases, as the supporting bars 7 serve to support the cover, and the samples may be laid on the cover for exhibition.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

1. In a locking and supporting means for suit cases, two locking disks .each having a recess in its periphery and a central vertical threaded perforation, two elongated supporting bars each having a longitudinal slot in one end and a pin extending from its under face, screws adapted to loosely secure the slotted ends of said supporting bars to said locking disks, knobs formed on the free ends of said supporting bars with means adapted or bar, 12,

,. in suitable to be secured to the outer side edge of a suit case body for engaging the free-ends of said supporting bars, substantially as described.

2. In a locking and supporting means for suit case covers, two locking disks each having a recess in its periphery, locking springs secured to the peripheries of said locking disks adapted to work over the recesses therein, elongated supporting bars having pins on their under faces and knobs at one of their ends, means formed in the ends of said supporting bars opposite the knobs thereof, and lndependent means co-acting with said means for loosely connecting said supporting bars to or near the centers of said locking disks, with means adapted to be secured to the outer side edge of the body of a suitcase {pr engaging the free ends of said supporting ars.

3. In a locking and supporting means for suit case covers, two locking disks adapted to besecured to the outer side edge of a suit case cover, two elongated supporting bars each terminating in a knob at one end,

I means formed in the ends of said supporting bars opposite the knobs thereof, and indeendent means co-acting with said means for oosely connecting said supporting bars to said locking disks, means adapted to be secured to the outer side edge of a suit case body for engaging the free ends of said supporting bars, with means formed in the peripheries of said locking disks and independent means co-acting with said means for locking said supporting bars in position when their free ends are swung outward to complete a half circle. a

4. In a locking and supporting means for suit case covers, the combination, of a looking disk having a recess in its periphery, a spring secured to the periphery of said disk and working over said recess, and supporting bar having a longitudinal slot in one end loosely secured to the center of said locking disk and having a pin formed on its under face adapted to work against the periphery of said locking disk and engage in the recess in said disk, substantially as described.

5. In a locking and supporting means for suit case covers, two locking disks adapted to be secured to the outer side edge of a suit case cover, two elongated supporting bars, means formed in one of the ends of said bars, independent means co-acting with said means for loosely connecting said supporting bars with the said locking disks, with means for locking said supporting bars in position when swung around to a certain position with reference to said disks, substantially as de scribed.
