No. 608,078. Patented July 26, I898. c. H. REDMAN, m.
HAIR CLIPPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 608,078, dated July 26, 1898.
Application filed November 26, 1397 Serial No. 659,743. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. REDMAN, J11, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Clippers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clippers of the ordinary type in which the top cutting-plate is held to and slides upon the screw-plateand between the screw-plate and the bottom outting-plate; and the object is to reduce the friction between the top cutting-plate and the screw-plate, and thus torender the operation of the clipper more effective and less laborious.
My invention consists of certain features of construction to be hereinafter described and then particularly claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved clippers. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the clippers reversed, the cutting-plates having been removed. Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 with the top outting-plate in position. Fig. 4 is a vertical central section of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 7
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the screw-plate of a pair of clippers and is provided, as usual, with a handle a, pivot-stud a, and guide-lugs a Pivoted about the stud a is the lever-handle B, having the usual operating-lug b at its extremity. A spring 0 is coiled about the pivot-stud a, one end of which bears against the lower handle, while the other end bears against the side of the screw-plate. The top cutting-plate D is provided with perforations d, into which the guide-lugs a extend, and centrally arranged between said perforations is a slot cl, in which the lug b of the lever-handle B operates. The lower cutting-plate E is provided with a countersunk orifice e for the passage of the threaded securing-bolt F, by which it is held to the screw-plate A. Perforations e are also provided in the lower cutting-plate E, into which the lugs a extend and aid in holding the plate firmly to the screw-plate. Inwardly from each side edge of the screw-plate A is drilled a hole G, extending past the guide-lugs a A screwplug 9 closes the opening G. The plate and screw-plug g are ground down until the hole G is exposed upon the surface of the screwplate, forming an undercut groove for the re ception and retention of the friction-balls g, from which groove they protrude slightly. The friction-balls are placed in the grooves or holes G by removing the screw-plug g. When the friction-balls are in position, the screw-pluggis secured in the opening G, thus keeping them in placeand at the same time allowing the balls to play freely between the screw-plate and top cutting-plate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A pair of clippers comprising a screw-plate having a handle and provided with undercut grooves extending inwardly from the ends thereof, friction-balls located in said undercut grooves, screw-plugs flush with the face of the screw-plate for closing the open ends of said grooves, a handle-lever pivoted to the screw-plate, a lower cutting-plate and a top cutting-plate actuated by said handle-lever and bearing against said friction-balls, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES II. REDMAN, JR.
