JAR CLOSURE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 9, 1905.
Suva trot UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed January 9,1905. Serial No. 240,213.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND O. FIsoHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Leandro, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar Closures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to jar-closures of the bail-clamp type, and has for its object the improvement of closures of this class by hav ing a sliding member mounted on the bail which is adapted to fit in a groove in the jartop, the surfaces of the jar-top and of the bottom of the groove curving upwardly from the outer edge of the top to its center, so that.
as the member is slid along the bail in fastening the top in place an increased pressure is exerted on the Jar-top.
The construction and advantages of my invention will be fully explained hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a fragment of a jar, showing the cover partly in section and in a locked position; Fig. 2,-a top plan view of the cover and locking means; Fig. 3, a crosssection of the cover and locking means on the line a: x of Fig. 2 Fig. 4, a detail view of the sliding member, and Fig. 5 a view of a modified form of the sliding member.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A represents the ar, having pivotally mounted thereon the locking-ball B, in Fig. 1 the bail being shown as secured in ears C, formed integral with the jar; but this may be altered as desired without changing the spirit of my invention.
D represents the j ar-top, having its upper surface made convex in shape, with a groove E in the top having its bottom surface curved upwardly from the outer edge of the jar-top. The groove E ends a short distance beyond the center of the top, the end of the groove being made fiat or slanting downwardly in an opposite direction from the slant of the bottom of the remaining part of the groove, as shown at e.
F represents a button or clamping member having a base G to fit in groove E, a perforated shank H, mounted on the bail B, and wing-like projections I on the shank to act as finger-holds in operating the clamping member; In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the button F is provided with two shanks each having a hole to receive the bail, this form adding strength to the fastening means and also keeping the base in alinement with the groove E.
My invention operates in the following manner: The top Dis put on the jar so that the groove E is on a line with the bail B. The button or clamping member F is then slid along the bail, its base G riding in the groove E and compressing the top until the base G finally comes to rest in the top portion 6 of the groove E.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a jar-closure, in combination with a jar, a bail secured thereto, and a jar-top, a clamping member mounted on the bail and adapted to slide thereon and seat on the jartoplin locking the top on the jar, substant'a y as shown and described.
2. In a jar-closure, in combination with a jar, a bail pivotally secured to the jar, and a jar-top having a groove therein parallel with the bail, and a clamping member mounted on the bail and adapted to slide thereon and ride in the groove in locking the top on the ar, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a jar-closure, in combination with a jar, a bail pivotally secured to the ar, and a j ar-top having a convex upper surface and a groove therein slanting upwardly from the outer edge thereof to the center of the jar-top, and a clamping member slidably mounted on the bail and adapted to ride in the groove, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a ar-closure, in combination with a jar, a bail pivotally secured thereto, and a jar-top having a groove therein, and a clamping member consisting of a base adapted to reciprocate in said groove, a shank having a hole therein to ride on said bail, and wing-like projections on said shank, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a ar-closure, in combination with a jar, a bail pivotally secured to the jar, and a bail, and wing-like projections on the shank, j ar-top having a convex upper surface with a substantially as shown and described.
groove therein slanting upwardly from the In testimony whereof Ihereto ai'fix my sigouter edge of the cover to the center thereof nature in the presence of two Witnesses.
and having its extreme inner end sloping FERDINAND O. FISCHER. downwardly, and a clam ing member con- Witnesses:
sisting of a base adapte to reciprocate in D. MCCARTHY,
said groove, a shank perforated to receive the O. J. LYNCH.
