Description

SfiMUEL W. HELM, yOF NEW YORK, N. Y. Y
EUR.
peei'eation of Letters Patent.
Patented nec. 1 7, ieee.
Application tied March Zit. 1906. Serial .Nui 307.380.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be' it known that i, SAMUEL W. Hinter, a citizenof the United States, residing at New .York cit lin the countv of New York: and
State of Neur York, have invented new andv usefulImprovements in Boxes, of which th followingy is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boxes, clnefiy, but no exclusiveiy, intendedv 'for containing "tobacco, has for its ob e'ct provision of such a box which may e, withgreat facility, sh'pped' into a gar'- ment pocket and rest comfortably against the body vof the person, and at the saine time tobacce` or other `artic es as compared with have 'an increased ca acity for containingv boxes'heretofore designed for the purposes above indicated.
'.The invention has for its .further object to provide hoxes havinLT the features described and, in combination therewith, a lid and' means .for Inovably or hingediy connect-- ing the saine to the box body in such manner that it may be easily and accurately opened and closed.
Having .the foregoing objects in View the invention consists in a box possessing 'the features hereinafter described, and illus-A trated in the accompanying drawings.
That which is regarded as vnew will be set forth in the claims appended to' `the-descrip-` tion. f
In the accompanying drawings-Figure i' is a perspective -view of the box, the lid being closed; Fig.. 2, is a longitudinai sec- -tional view on a line/taken through the end Walls; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on a .line
taken through the front and rear wallsg' Fig.
4 is a horizontal section.v
In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 designates, general y, the body of the box,
Wliichis relatively. deep froin the top to the bottoni tliereof,-the depth inay "oe in. creased or decreased as may be desired., ac
coi'ding to the contemplated capacity of the box. The front wall 2 of the box is-con cavo-convex, and the ends S of the box are also conczwo-convex, and inergeinto the front and rear walls, as will clearly apjiear from Figs. l and 4, without presenting sharp angles, whereby the box ii'iaji,v with great facility bc introduced into and withdrawn from a ga'riiient pocket, such as the side pocket of a coat or the rear pocket of trousers. 'lhe'rear Wall 4 of the box is flat, or, in other words, constitutes a'piane surface which rests easiiy and comfortablyagainst: the body of the person. lifhe provision off' thefiat or plane rear Wall of the hox, in" addition to other purposes which will be 'pared with priorboxes in which one wall of' the box is convex and the other concave'.
As vshown the front and end wallsl of.l the box are folded inwardly to constitute strengthening'ribs 5, 5a for the upper and' lower edges of the box body and the lbwer edge of the rearwali is corresooiidinglyfolded inwardly to constitute a. ri` 6, which', tojgether with the rib lat the bottoni ofthe'v iront and end walls constitute a supporting flange for the bottom 7A of the hex, Whicl'r may be iitted on said flange and soldered thereto.-
The provision of the rihs or ianges to the' box at its top'andl bottom ends, affords ri' giditylthereto and maintains-the shapethereof. w lch is particularly important in res ect of the upper end of the box that is closel by the hinged lid 8, since it maintains the shape 4of the edge and prevents distortion thereof in ordinary usage, so that the lid can, with ease and facility, he opened and closed, the rim of the lid of the box always passing over andv Aneatly fitting the stiffened upper edge of the ists in closing the llid upon the-body of the box, by 'reason of the fact that but 'one hinge-and that a very short'one,'is or can be employed to eonnecttheicover to the box, on which hinge the lid has more or less play so that when ,it is attempted tol close the saine on the body ofthe box it is almost'invariably out of line to have the rim' thereof accurately ass over the lid of the box to. accomplish tie closing. rihis is a source of great inconvenience.
According to n'iy invention, by reason of ythe llat wall of the box, the lid may be connectedthereto by a plurality of hinges or by a singie long hinge eo-extensive with the width of the rear Wall and correspondingedgo of the lid. Asshown, two hinges are ilo,
utilized, end the binge@ ere commuove-.d in the following menne?. The of the let Weil of the box is cui, ewiy et iurelizy (wf-places 'to expose che eintle 12 of the hinge. The pintle coiisiss o. e. wire rod which is co-extesive in lengt-h witli the uper edge o the rear weil end secured in place T folding the upper edge of the Wall vtl1eree out as best shown ai; 13 in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Coincide/nt with the cutawe portions il the lid or covei` is pi'ovided wi pxokieoting tongues 14 which are folded about the exposed poi-tions of the pintles, whereby the lid is moy'ebly connected tothe box body et sepomte points and there is no locseness oi play oi ehe iid or cover whereby it could geal out of accurate register with the upper of the box body, T he let rear Well is impone-.nt in respect of the practical hieging of the lid tliereo so that ib may be eas-ily sind eoculetely opened, and without es" eeiel meniplation thereof, bc again closed over the mouth of the box.
By my invention i provide a box which can be very easily slipped into and Withdrawn from e.. garment pocket, end when disposed therein, rest comfortably against. the body of the erson, and which een be conveniently pacxed in a Velise or lunch basket or ishing kit o? the like, and one while ateining these useful purposes,'pre
sente e maximum inei'ior holdiggg chamber. I
Having time deeeiibed my invention, what I cle-im ie: y
A box e.. convex from Well, e. 'let rear Well convex end Wells mei' fing into said ''on find Tee- Wells without sharp engles, the rem well being provided et its upper edge with e pluelioy of out :iwey portions, e. pinle ero-extensive in length with the edwe o 'sei 'eei Well and secured theeto by iol .ing lie edge of lie latter theieebout, poiiions of seid pintle bei-ng exposed iii said out away poitons, a oever pioyided with e A luifeliy o tongues coincident. with sind clded about seid exposed poitions oi the pinhe wbez'eby the lid. is hinged to the box et poins to pzovide ehinged connection co-exensive 'mili the edge of the ree? Wells of the body, imvei'dly turned le'nges et the lower egeof aliejrot emi and. ree' wells and box bottom ited .Within the box body against seid inwardly turned flange.
Xn testimony whereof l lila-ye hoeunto sei; my bend in presence oi" two subscribing Witmesses.
