JEFFERSON, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Shirt-Stud; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,-and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear,
and exaetdescription of the same, and which said -tached tol the shank of the principal head, through which said shank a headed spindle passes, provided with -a spring, which forcesjthe said spindle against the joint of the divided head, so that the force of the said spring will retain the divided head either in a closedor flat open position.
In orderto the clear understanding of my invention, I will fully describe the same as illustrated in the aecompanying drawings.

'Io the said shank, are hinged the two parts, a a, of a divided head, so that the said two parts 'may be folded or opened, as denoted in fig, 4.
Through the shank passes a spindle, d, formed with a head, c, resting against the hinge of the two parts a, and upon the opposite end of the said spindle is ar.- rangeda spring, f, (see iig. 3,) so as vto bear upon the said spindle with sucient force to prevent the accidental turning of the parts a a. c
To insert the stud, fold the two parts a together, as seen in fig. 4, and when inserted, openl the two parts, as also seen in iig. 4, the spindle d holding the parts, when turned into either position, by the pressure of the spring thereon.
Having fully described my invention,
WhatI claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
`The two parts a, of the one head, hinged together upon the shank B, of the other head, and combined with the spindle d, through the shank, so as 'to operate substantially in the manner set forth.
