'CORNELIUS WALSH AND JOSIA'H-A WALSH, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY,-
ASSIGNORS T0 GQRNELIUS WALSH.
Letters PatentNo. 97,733, dated December 7, 1869.
IMPROVEDIASTENING FOR TRAvELLINGAGs.
The Schedule 'referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
We,`0oRNE L1Us WALsH and J osIAH WALSH, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, .have invented an Improved Fastening for "lravelling-Bags and fdo hereby describe the same.
Nat-ure and Objects of the Invention.
Our fastening" is of the description usually employed at the ends of travelling-bags as'additional or supplementary supports, and4 is so Vconstructed as to open and close without rubbing the cover.
The invention-consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts in such a fastening.
Description of Drau-ings.
The accompanying drawings represent a pair-of our improved fastenin gs applied to a bag-trame as side claspsi Figure 1 being a perspective View of the frame and fastenings in au open` position;
Figure 2, a partial end view, with the frame and fasteningsclosed;` and .Figure 3, atransverse section at z z, iig. 2.l
Similar marks of reference .indicate like parts in the several ligures.
` General Description.
A A in the drawings, represent the respective jaws of the frame; i
' a a, the hinges connecting the same; and
B, the band applied to the jaw A, to cover the joint, 85o. y. y
`None of these parts require any special construction for the reception of the fastening forming theA subject of thisV invention.` 'lheir presence, however,
in some form, or their equivalent, is `necessary for the application ofthe fastening to a bag. The fastening inits preferred form'is composed of a base plate or bracket, l, a clasp, 2, and a button or stop,.3. z The bracket 1 is adapted for attachment by rivets, b b, or their equivalents, to the band B, or a similar `part of thefxalne, and for the reception of the other parts,2 3, ofthe fastening, being employed to 'snpport said parts. l
The clasp 2 is of L-shape, consisting of tw'o portions at right angles to each other, and is hinged at one extremity to the bracket l, by a pivot 4, parallel with the base of said bracket ,and with its own bearingface. p i f The fastening is applied so that the pivot 4 of the claspv shall be parallel with the surface with which it is to' engage, and at such distance from .the front edge ot" the top of the frameas to allow the clasp to close around it,(asindicated in iig. 3A of the drawings,) in
which manner it operates.
It thus closes directly against the surface with which it is to engage, consequently without rubbing' it, In opening, it moves directly away from the surface engaged. Its action may be compared to that of the hand in closing and holding the mouth of a bag.
`It'is provided outside of its pivot with a shoulder, 6, for the engagement of a button or stop, 3, to hohl it in its closedv posit-ion, which shoulder may be also so disposed as by engagement with the top of the bracket to form a positive limit to its retraction.
` 'The butt-on or stop 3 may be of any form presenting a retractable surface, 7, for the engagement of the shoulder 6 on the clasp 2. lt is applied to the `top of the bracket, and preferably pivoted at 8.1
The engaging surfacesv 6 7, of the'clasp 2, and buttended for end clasps, they may be made in pairs, as
indicated, or have a uniform construction.
As a modification, the clasps might be hinged directly to the band of the frame. I
' Operation. The mouth of the bag being closed and locked, the clasps 2 are pressed around against the face of the movable jaw AJ and, being held tlie1e,the stops 3 `are brought into position, supporting them. The stops being removed, the clasps may be turned back, releasing `the movable jaw, and allowing the bag to be opened.
` Claim.
YVe-claim, as our invention-- A fastening for travelling -Ahags, composed of a bracket, 1, clasp 2, 4, 5,' 6, and button. or stop 3, 7,
constructed and 'arranged to operate .in/the manner `herein represented and described, for the purposes set forth. j
