Description

unirsi) srxrns PATENT' 'orricn FERDINAND HOLM, `OF BROOKLYN, YORK.
` j "PORTABLE, SHOWER-BATH.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND HOLM, of Brooklyn, Kings county, State ot' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Shower-Baths; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full description of the` same.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of a force pump, with a box of an octagonal or other suitable form, and jointed together at the middle so as when closed to form a semi-octagonal box to hold the torce pump jets, &c., also in combining with the box or bath tub, when opened a series of leaves, to extend the area of the tub, by means of slides holding the edges of the leaves together in one continuous rim to prevent the spray from the jets wet-- ting the floor. But to describe my invention more particularly I will refer to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this schedule, the same letters in the several drawings referring to the same parts wherever they occur.
Figure l is a perspective 'View of t-he bath. Fig. 2 is a view ot two of the leaves for extending the area of the tub. Fig. 3
' is a view of one of the slides for holding the edges of the leaves together. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the tub or box as extended showing the pins and eye pieces by which l the torce pump is secured to the bottom of j the tub. Fig. 5 is a view of the slide piece for covering the joint of the tub or box when opened. Fig. 6 is a view of the force l pump and jets. Fig. 7 is a View of the box when closed, and all the fixtures of the bath are inclosed.
Letter A, is the box or tub. This tub is made octagonal, (though might be made of other forms, the octagonal howeverl is preferable) and of tin or other suitable metal. In the middle of the tub, (transversely) is a joint B, so as when the bath is not wanted for use, or is to be transported to the country, thebox may be closed in the smallest possible shape, as represented in Fig. 7. On the edge of the joint or hinge of the tub is a slide or covering C. The
use of this is to protect the joint from leaking water whenthe bath is being used, and also keeping the two halves of the tub from bending up. Around the edges of the tub are arranged eight leaves D, D, &c. These leaves are made of metal,'though eil skin or other water proof material might be used,

and are attached to the tub by means of ear pieces E, E, &c., (secured to the inner edges of the leaves,) litting into loops or clasps F, F, &c., on the inner edges of the tub. At the joining edges of these leaves, they are slightly bent over, so as to admit of the edges of the slide G, to pass underneath them and hold them lirmly together and prevent any leakage of water, and thereby forming, when the tub is thus put together a capacious bathing tub ot simple and easy adjustment, as well as of great portability. In the bottom of this tub is arranged the force pump H, which by means of ear pieces h2, and pins I, I, is secured to the eye pieces 2, i2, in the bottom of t-he tub. Connected with the -force pump is an air vessel J. F rom the side of this air vessel, is a small pipe K, having a stop cock in it, and a sprinkler on the end; also from the upper side of the air vessel is another pipe L, which is jointed for convenience ot packing in the box, and has a stop cock in it, and a sprinkler on its end for showering the occupantot` the bath. From the side of this vertical pipe is a side pipe "M, having a stop cock in it and a sprinkler to be used for the face or back as may be required.
To the back of the vertical pipe is a standard N, for supporting the pipes, having'its lower end fitting into a socket P, on the inside of the box.
Having now described my improved shower bath I will explain its operation and mode of putting together. The operation of putting together is first the leaves are attached to the sides of the tub by the ear pieces in t-he order of their numbers, then the joining edges are secured together' by the slides `which completes the bath tub. The next operation is to secure the lorce pump and `jet pipes by means of' the pins to the bottom of the tub. VOn water now A being placed in the tub, the occupant ot the bath may force it up through either of the pipes as may be required. It for the shower, he must turn off the cocks of the two lateral pipes. If for the tace or back sprinkler, he must open the upper .lateral stop cock, and shut ottl the stop cock to the sho-werer; or if the lower sprinkler is required, the two upper stop cocks must be shut off, thus the operator may vary the application of the water to suit his pleasure.
Having now described my invention and its operation, I Will proceed to state what I and slides G, G, Sao., substantially as set claim and desire to secure by Letters Patforth. ent:
What I claim therefore, s FERDINAND HOLM' .5 The use of the boX or tub for a portable Witnesses:
shower bath made n two halves, in comb- CHARLESl I1. BARRITT, nation with the slide C, leaves D, D, &c., ALEX. SMITH.
