To all whom it may con/com:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. (limit, a citizen of the United States, residing at Old Orchard, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hand stamps designed especially for use in canceling stamps, and the object of the invention is to produce a device of this character whereby the ilnprcssion may be clearly made upon the envelop and stamp whether the full force of the impact of the stamp is fiat against the envelop or whether a portion of the edge of the stamp first comes in contact with the envelop, the shank portion of the stamp holder being made up of a plurality of yielding portions which will cause the mo mentum of the stamp to print uniformly.

My inventionconsists further in other details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

A portion of the circumference of said shank of the stamp has flattened faces bearing against the right angled flattened portions T, T formed in the marginal wall of the opening in said ring, whereby as the screw holds the flattened faces of the shank against the faces '1, the stamp may be held from rotation.

By the provision of a stamp made as SllOWll and described, in which the metallic strip which holds the stamp, is made with two resilient arms spaced apart in the manner shown, a clear impression may be printed upon an envelop and stamp whether the force of the blow is delivered against the marginal edge of the stamp or upon the full face thereof; in the former event, one or the other of the resilient arms of the strip will yield and the momentum of the blow serve to cause a sharp and clear definition upon the envelop.

What I claim is A hand stamp comprising a handle having a flat metallic strip of resilient metal fixed thereto, said strip being longitudinally recessed forming two arms which are bent at an angle near their outer ends, said strip terminating in a flat widened portion, a head having a plurality of stamps, a shank projecting from said head and having an angled portion, a ring having an opening therein with an angled olIset therein adapted to receive the angled portion of said shank, said ring having a threaded aperture, and a set-screw fitted in said aperture and adapted to bear against said shank of the head to hold the angled portion of the shank in said offset, as set forth.
