To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK Pants and Jnss CHRISTENSEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county. of
King and State of Washington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in StamprCanceling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in stamp canceling devices and more particularly to improvements in such devices that are adapted for canceling postage stamps that are affixed to packages to be transported by the parcel post branch of government mail service, and the object of my, improvement is to provide a simple and inexpensive self-inking postage stamp canceling device that may be rolled overthepostage stamps I of a package or parcel to cancel such stamps without striking such package aviolent blow as has been necessary heretofore when using the ordinary'flat faced hand-stamp. We accomplish this object by the'device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 by a plan view represents a stamp canceling device embodying our invention; Fig. 2 illustrates the same by a view in side elevation, certain parts being broken away more clearly to show other parts, Fig.
3 is a view. in horizontal cross-section on broken line y, y of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 illustrates a detail of my invention. v
Referring to the drawings, in which like reference numerals indicate like parts, 5 and 6 constitute portions of a two part handle,
and 7 and 8 are side platesthat are attached respectively to like ends of the handle parts 5 and 6 to adapt them, when the two parts 5 and 6 of the handle are secured together, to form a U shaped bracket onthe end of the handle. I Q

with a shank 17 as shown in Fig. 3, and is, disposed to adapt it to engage with the pivot shaft 13 adjacent to either side of the ink project within a recess that is provided in an a'd ustmg bar 19 that extends lengthwise ,within a recess 18 that is formed in the which is threaded on its outer end and adapted to screw within a sleeve 21 which sleeve 21 is. provided with a collar 22 that fits within suitably formed recesses provided inthe' handle parts 5 and 6 thus to prevent such sleeve 21 from endwise movepad 12, thesaid shank 17 being disposed to ment but adapting it for rotary movement.
The two parts 5 and 6 of the handle are secured together by screws 24, 24:, as shown in Fig. 2, while the plates 7 and 8 are secured in their relative positions at their outer ends by the pivot shaft 10. What We claim is:
In a device of the class described, the combination of a hollow handle, bracket arms carried by one end of said handle, a type roller rotatably-mounted in the outer ends of said arms, an inking roller yieldinglymounted in said arms, a forked member engaging the inking roller and extending into the hollow handle, a spring surrounding said forked member, and means disposed Within the handle and operable from the outer end thereof for controlling the tension of the spring.
