Description

' A. S. MGGREEVY.
HAND STAMP.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 26, 1909.
Patented Apr. 19, 1910.
of construction, and combinations and ar- ALLEN S. MCGREEVY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAND-STAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN S. MOGREEVY, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hand stamps, the object of the invention being to provide a plurality of members having rotary mounting relative to each other, one of said members provided at its edge with type, which is adapted to register with any of a series of edges on the other member carrying type, or with a blank space on the other of said members, and provide improved means for locking the parts in operative relation to each other at any rotary adjustment.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features rangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is a view in side elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is an edge view. Fig. 3, is a view in longitudinal section, and Fig. 4, is a rear elevation.
1 represents a forked bracket, having a handle 2 fixed thereon. This forked bracket is connected by a rivet 3, which serves as a journal upon which a block 4: has rotary mounting, beside a tongue or block 5. The rivet 3 also passes through tongue or block 5, and one end of bracket 1 is longer than the other end, and is provided with an opening to receive a screw 6 driven into the tongue or block 5, so as to hold the latter in locked engagement with the bracket.
The block 1 may be of the shape shown in Figs. 1 and 4, that is of general seven sided form, having type 7, preferably rubber type, secured upon siX of the faces, with the seventh space, designated by the char acter 8, left blank, while the edge of tongue 5 is also provided with type 7. The type of tongue 5 is adapted to register with the type of any of the faces of block 4:, and a stamp of this kind is especially adapted for use by mail carriers, in which case the tongue will be provided with the proper type to print the letter carriers name and number, while on the edges of block 4, dif- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 26, 1909.
Patented Apr. 19, 1910. Serial No. 509,662.
ferent words and phrases would be used, such as ordinarily employed by the carrier in marking mail, and when the carrier simply desires to stamp his own name and number without any additional printing, he simply turns block at until the blank space S registers with the tongue.
In order to secure the rotary member and tongue in operative relation to each other, a series of openings 9 are provided in the block at, and a single opening 10 in tongue 5, and a pin 11 is adapted to pass into the hole 10 and in any one of the holes 9 accordingly as the stamp is to print.
I do not limit myself to any particular number of faces or edges on the rotary member or on the tongue, nor to any manner of fastening the type, or to any particular type, and a great many slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangements of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hand stamp comprising a forked bracket, one member of said forked bracket being longer than the other, a rivet connecting the members of said forked bracket, a block having rotary mounting on said rivet between the members of the forked bracket, and providing a series of type carrying edges and a blank space, a tongue having an opening to receive the rivet and located beside the rotary block, said tongue having a printing surface, which registers with the printing surface carried by the block, when the latter is in printing position, a screw projecting through the longer member of said bracket and into the tongue securing the latter against rotary movement, said tongue having a single opening, and said block a series of openings, and a pin adapted to be positioned in the opening in the tongue, and in any of the openings in the block to lock the block and tongue together.
2. A hand stamp comprising a forked bracket, a rivet secured in said forked bracket, a tongue through which said rivet projects, a fastening device in one member of said bracket secured in the tongue, holding the latter rigid, a block located beside the tongue, and having rotary mounting on said rivet, said block providing a series of type carrying edges, and a blank edge, all of which edges are adapted to separately register with the edge of said tongue, an opening in the tongue, and a series of openings in the rotary nieinber adapted to register with the opening in the tongue, when the print-ingt edges are in register, and a pin adapted to be i positioned in. said opening to lock the tongue 10 and rotary member in printing register.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
