To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, "WILBUR F. VITI-IER ELL, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Argyle, in the county of lVashington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Printing Brush-Backs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to printing presses and particularly to attachments therefor, to be employed in connection with the printing of brush backs and the like.

An object of this invention is to provide novel means whereby the brush printing mechanism may be applied to the platen of presses now in common use,.thus making it possible to convert an ordinary printing press into a press adapted for printing on brush backs or other irregular surfaces, means being provided whereby the impres sion may be adjusted to compensate for materials of different thicknesses, means being also provided for holding the brush backs by means of adjustable members coacting with one another and with a yieldable plate.

A further object of this invention is to provide means whereby the several parts of the device may be readily adjusted and furthermore whereby it may be held at different positions of adjustment.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates aplan View of the device;

Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and

Fig. 3 illustrates an edge view of the rubber type and cushion employed in connection with the article holding device.

the base plate may be clamped to a platen of an ordinary printing press and as the means for attaching the base plate may be modified, further detailed description of this feature of the invention will be omitted.

The base plate has apertures 8 for the reception of guiding bolts 9, which bolts eX- tend through an impression plate 10. The

impression plate is held in spaced relation to the base plate by springs 11, which on circle the bolts 9 and the ends of the springs bear against the base plate and impression plate respectively and through. the adjust ment of the nuts 12, the tension of the springs 11 may be controlled or regulated.

The guide blocks and holders 13 are supported on the impression plate and the adjacent edges of the two blocks are of such formation as to create a seat 14: between the said blocks when they are adjusted with relation to each other. Provision is made for holding the blocks at different positions of adjustment by reason of the fact that the said blocks are slotted transversely as at- 15, and bolts 16 extend through an impression plate and through the slots of the blocks, and said bolts are engaged by nuts 17 which bear against the blocks a d frictionally retain them in the different positions of adjustment.

The seat formed between the adjacent edges of he blocks is adapted to receive the brush backs or articles to be stamped or printed and a guard or clip 18 is attached to one of the blocks and adapted to engage the article to prevent its dislodgment from the eat, during the printing operation.

A cushion 19 has the usual type strip 20 of a rubber stamp attached to it and the said cushion may be attached to the chase holder of a printin press by wires 21 which engage the outer face of the said cushion, the said wires being attached to the chase holder in any appropriate way.

The construction, operation and advantages of the device will itis thought be understood from the foregoing description and it is noted that the base plate and impression plate may be constructed of metal and the edges flanged and it is particularly desirable to flange the base plate as clearance is afforded for the ends of the bolts and they are held from engagement with the platen of the press so that no injury can result. i
