To al] whom, 'it may concern Be it ltnownthat4 ,-BnNJ.-\M1N F. Bnnnr, acitizen of tlie'United States of America, and a resident of the city .of St. Louis and State of'iissouri, have` invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n yPrintnrer Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, land exact description, reference being had to the aeeompanying drawings` forming a part: ofthis specification.
My invention relates to afprinting apparatus of [such eonstruction as to permit the use of lithographie sheets in lieu of lithoeraphiqstones inprinting operations. the object' ot' the present improvement being' similar to that contemplated by U.v S. Patent No. 032.100. issued to m August Q4, 1909. Said patent may, therefore. be referred to for a tull andeomplete understanding ot' the objects sought bythe type oi printing apparatus to which my presentv invention pertains.
Figure is a vertical longitudinal section ot 'a printing,r apparatus embodying the tea- Fig. ll is t bed ot my apparatus. with a fragment of the impression cylinder 4in elevation above the bed. Fig. lli is an enlarged section of a 4fragment of the bed. with an end portion of the impression cylinder in elevation.
Tn the drawings :'-1 'designates track rails thateonsti-tute a traelt upon which the bed ot my printing' apparatus operates. and while these traik rails are" shown as independent members. it is obvious thattt trarlt comprising a single member of the requisite width might be used in lieu of said rails. l will, vtor the salte of convenience. hereinafter refer to the traelr a. inelndinethe two rails 1. ln the present form ot my apparatus. the top surfaces of lthe track rails l are ounitormplane trom end to enti of each rail` as distininished t'rom the curved top surfaces in my former patent hereinhetore alluded to.
2 designates a lithographie sheet bed that. is seated on the track rails l and is adapted to be reeiproeated thereon by any suitable means. rlhis bed is preferably provided at its bottom with runners 3, which rest on the trank rails, but which may be dispensed with, it' desired. lhe bed 2 is provit'ted with a` curved top face fl, the curvature ot said tace beingy longitudinally of the bed and the apex ot' said eurvaturo being beq tween the ends ot the bed. The curved top;` tace of said bed receives a lithographie sheet A. that may be ot' zine or other suit- `able sheet material; and u'hieh will lie 60 firmly upon said face. owing to the eurvatnreot' the latter` without any tendency to buckle. as it would if the top face of the bed were level. 'l`lie` reason t'orthis is clearly pointed ont in mv earlier patent, and it is deemed unneeessarv to repeat such reasons herein. "l`be'lithographie sheet is indieated by the letter and said sheet ma)v be .secured to the bed 2 by any suit able meanssuch. At'or instance. as a binding` strip 5 attached to the bed over the sheet at one end ot' [he t'ormer. and a clamping' strip G located in a lL'roove at the other end of the bed and bearing' against an end ot' the lith- `ographie sheet in said `groove. to whieh the said strip is heldb v means. sneh as binding,lr screws i.
S desigginitesl an impression e'vlinder Situated above and transversel)v ot' the traek rails` l and beneath whit-h the bed i is adapted to reciprocate. This impression eylinder is movable vertically to permit the passage -ot the curved bed '2 thereunder durin printin; operations. and to provide 'tot-the cylinder being' maintained in4 its proper posi- 8 tion longitudinally ofthe printing apparatus. its journals are mounted in suitable' bearinir boxesl t). movable vertically in slots l0 arranged in standards ll extending upwardlv at the sides of the printing appa- 90 ratas-onliY one ot' said standards and the parts eoiiperable therewith being` shown in the drawings. but it will be mulerstood that complementary parts are present atl the opposite side ot' the apparatus. Springs 12 loeated above and resting on the bearing boxes 9 serve to hold said bearingboxes yieldingly depressed. in order that the impression oyiinder 8 journaled to said bearin e boxes ma) be eonstantly held in proper 10 relation to the hed 2 of the apparatus, for the proper performance of printing operations.
Vhen my printingr apparatus is in use, the bed 2 with a lithographie sheet thereon, is reeiprocated upon the track provided therefor, and it., therefore, moves to and fr0 beneath the. spring pressed impression cylinder to provide for printing being` effected through the medium of said lithographie sheet., in a manner similar to that in which lithographie printingr is `accomplished in the ordinary form of lithographie printing press Inasmnch as it is necessary in my present improvement to utilize means. such as the springs' 1Q, for yieldiiigly controlling the iinpression cylinder of the apparatus, in order that the curved bed 2 may pass to and fro thereunder, it ispartieularly necessary that means be' provided to prevent eXcessive pressure upon the printing sheet by the impression cylinder caused by the action of the springs, which tend to force the' cylinder toward the press bed. Therefore, to avoid such excessive pressure, and at the same time acquire 4the necessary pressure by the impression cylinder upon a sheet of paper, or .other material to which an impression Ais to be made from the lithographie sheet,'1 provide the bed 2 with bearers 13 and the impression eylinderwith bearers 4 14.A The bearers 13 are located on the bed adjacent the side edges, and the bearers 14 are cylindrical members located at the ends of the 'impression eylinder'and adapted to bear upon the bearers 13. It will be apparent that these arers serve to so support the impression cylinder at all times as to permit ol only the desired pressure being derived from the impression' cylinder, notwithstandiineT th'e action of the springs 12 upon said cylinder. Another import-ant advantage in the use of the curved bearers on the bed 3 and the cylindrical bearers on the impression cylinder lies in the fact that the continuous contact of these bearers against each other dining printing operations provides for the fsteadying of the impression cylinder during its rotation, there- 'by avoidingr slur-ring of said cylinder over the lithographie sheet', 'with resultant blurring of the printing.
