Be it known that I, TVILLIAM B. VAIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Bridging Recesses in Cylinders of Embossing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for bridging the recesses or channels formed in the circumference of the cylinder of an embossing or printing press.
The invention is essentially adapted for attachment to an embossing press for punctcgraphing characters on both pages of a sheet of paper for reading by the blind. The embossing cylinders of a press of this kind are usually provided with recesses or channels formed in the periphery of the cylinders for carry ing the gripping devices of the machine. Heretofore when the circumferential gaps came into conjunction with the impression cylinder there would be a momentary stoppage of the forward movement or feeding motion of the sheet, and it is the object of this invention to obviate this diiiiculty. By means of this invention thecircumference across the recess or channel of the embossing cylinder is bridged by a segmental plate so that when the gap is in line with the axis of revolution of the impression cylinder the sheet will be given even pressure and the forward movement thereof will be uninterrupted. The segmental plate supports the sheet while the latter is passing between the recess and the impression cylinder thus giving uniform feed and at the same time keeping the sheet in register with the succeeding pair of cylinders.
The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of an embossing press embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a pair of cylinders. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a fixture.
In this drawing the letter a designates the embossing cylinders and b are the impression cylinders. These cylinders are arranged vertically in pairs and the upper cylinders are provided with embossing plates 0. The first pair of cylinders emboss one page or side of a sheet of paper (Z while the other pair of cylinders are adapted to emboss the other page of said sheet of paper. The upper embossing cylinders usually have recesses a formed in the periphery and extending along the length of the cylinder for housing the gripper mechanism as is well known. Each one of these recesses is provided with a base member f which is fastened to the bottom of the recess by means of set screws 9. These set screws carry springs h pressing against the base member and these springs have a tendency to push the said member centrifugally. A segmental plate z' is attached to the stem of the base member and extends across the recess. This plate can be removed when it is desired to adjust the embossing plates. The coiled springs press the fixture with the segmental plate toward the impression cylinder, when meeting therewith, and the screws form an adjusting medium to limit the movement of the fixture. The segmental plate supports the sheet while the latter is passing between the recess, and the impression cylinder, thus keeping the sheet in con tact with the periphery of the embossing cylinder to give continuous feed. The device gives continuous contact with the cylinders hence giving uniform feed and movement to the sheet at every point of the revolution of the cylinder.
I claim 1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a cylinder having a peripheral recess, of a fixture consisting of a base member mounted in the recess, a segmental plate attached to the upper portion of the base member for bridging the recess, devices applied to the base member and engaging the cylinder for adjusting and limiting the centrifugal movement of the fixture, and springs carried by the adjusting devices for cushioning the fixture.
