Description

. tnitd 5mm v @aan emu.
Letters Patent No. 93,345, dated August 3, 1869. y
IMPROVEMENT IN' HAND-STAMPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all'whom tt may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. A. POST, of the city and State of New York, (post oice,)rhav.c invented and made a new and useful Improvement in Letter- Oaneelling Stamps for printing the postmark and cancelling the stamp; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a vertical section of said stamp, and
Figure 2 is an inverted plan of the face of the same.
Similar parts are denoted by the same letters.
Heretofore the stamps employed in post oflices for cancelling letters and impressing the postmark, have been made with the name of the post office engraved in the stamp, and also a cavity, into which movable types are inserted, containing the letters and figures of the date. These types become wedged into the cavity, and gummed in with the ink and brous material of the ink-pad, Sto., so that there is great diiliculty in getting them out, and frequently the types are injured in removing them to introduce others, and the stamp is scratched, or considerable time lost in effecting this change.
My invention has been devised for the purpose of removing the diiiiculties which, by long experience in the general post oce at New York, is the diculty, as before indicated, with hand-stamps -for cancelling and marking letters.
I make the stamp a itself in one piece, with the cross-piece b, that connects by the tang c to the stampthat is on line with some of the types, but not large enough for any one to pass thereinto under the concussion to which it is subjected, but said hole t allows of the introduction of a pusher, f, so that when the screw g is loosened, the types can be pushed out by the direct application of power to the base of one or more of them, thus preventing injury to the types, and saving considerable trouble and time.
I do not claim, herein, a letter-cancelling stamp, in which the stamp and cancelling-cork are applied -to one handle, nor the removing of the Jtypes by a pusher.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'A letter-cancelling stamp, in which the stamp a, cross-pieee l), tang c, and cork-carrier, are all formed of onepiece of metal, in the manner shown, so as to insure strength and lightness, and allow the hole 'i to be inserted, in the manner specified.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this 30th day oi' March, A. D. 1869.
, JOHN. A. A. POST.
