T. S. COFFIN, OF HARRINGTON, MAINE.
Letters Patent No. 86,367,dated February 2, 1869..
IMPROVEMENT m SCYTHE-SKATES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and maln'ng part; of the same. -o- I To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, T. S. COFFTN, of Harrington, in the county of Washington, and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scythe- Snaths; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming parts of this specification, in which- Figure l'is a top view of the lower part of my improved scythe-sna-th, part being broken away to show the construction.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same-takenthrough the line x x, fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line y y of 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved scythe-snath, so constructed and arranged that all the parts necessary for securing the scythe to the snath may be connected with and attached to the snath, so that the scythe may be hung and unhung without the use of any detached tool, and which will, at the same time, hold the scythe securely in place upon the snath; and
it consists in the construction of the various parts of the device, and in their combination with the snath, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the snath, around the lower end of which is placed an iron band or ring, B, having two holes or inortises formed through it, extending into the solid wood of the snath A, to receive the lugs 0 formed upon the upper side of the lower endof the lever (l.
The lever O passes through a hole or slot in the snath A, above the band B, and extends along and lies in a groove formed for its reception in the upper side of the lower part of' the snath A, as shown in figs. 1 and 2.
The lever G is pivoted to the snath A by a bolt or pin passing through the part of said lever that passes through the snath A, and through the centre of said snath.
The lower part of the lever O has a hole formed through it for the passage of theshank of the scythe,
sothat the said shank may be clamped between the end of the lever O and the end of the snath A, as shown in fig. 2, the lugs c passing into the snath at each side of the scythe-shank.
Upon the upper part of .the lower side of the lever G is formed an arm, 0 having several holes formed in it, which said arm enters a recess formed in the snath A to receive it, as shown in fig. 2.
D is a lever-catch, which is pivoted to the snath A within a groove formed in the rear side of said snath, as shown in fig. 1, so that the catch-pied formed upon its lower end may pass into the snath A, and through .one orfthe other of the holes in the arm 0} of the lever 0, so as to hold the lever G securely in place, firmly clamping the shank of the scythe.
E is a plate or strap attached to the snath A, and which hasseveral holes formed through it to receive the lug formed upon the end of the scythe-shank, so
that the scythe may be hung in or out, as may be de-' sired.
It should be observed that the lever G and catchlever D should be so let into the snath A, that their outer surface may be flush with the surface of the saidsnath, so as to present no projecting part for the grass to catch upon.
If desired, the lever-catch D may be replaced with a band or ring, sliding upon the snath A,- so as to confine the lever O securely in place, but-I prefer the construction first described, as being simpler, more convenient, and equally .eifective.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The lever O, constructed substantially as herein shown. and described, in combination with the snath A, as'and for the purpose set forth.
a 2. The combination of the band Bandlever-catch D with the lever O and snath A, substantially-as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
' T. S. COFEIN.
