To all whom it may concern:

Be it-known that I, Josnrn CoNNons, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Rests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a back rest, and particularly to a device adapted to be adjusted upon a bed frame and to be supported at different angles as found desirable.

The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of support embracing an attaching bracket adapted to engage the frame of a bed and to support the rest and its arms in reversed positions and at the various angles of inclination to which it may be adjusted.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.

The numeral 1 designates the frame of a bed which may be of any desired character or configuration, and is adapted to receive at its opposite sides the supporting brackets 2. These brackets are formed with sockets of different diameter adapted for attachment either to a metal frame of a bed by means of the lower socket 3, or to the frame of a wooden bed by means of the upper socket 4, these sockets being formed by lateral plates or projections 5 extending from the side of the bracket 2. The bracket is formed at its upper end with pivoting lugs 6 in which the U-shaped frame 7 of the rest is mounted, and at its lower end with oppositely disposed lugs 8 each being provided with a pivoting socket 9 adapted to receive the ends of the cross bar 10 which carries the supporting arms 11 for the frame 7. This form of bracket permits a reversal of the supports carried thereby and also its longitudinal adjustment upon the frame of the bed. For the purpose of holding the bracket in proper position a tension spring 13 is disposed upon each of the ends 14 of the frame 7 and bears against the lug 6 and against a suitable stop 15 carried by the frame. This places the brackets under tensionlaterally of the frame so as to retain them in position and permit them to be slid upon the bed frame for properly positioning the back rest as found convenient for the user. This frame is provided with the covering 16 of fabric or any desired material which may be attached in any suitable manner, preferably by means of the hooks 17 secured to the edges thereof and adapted to enter apertures 18 formed in the frame 7, as shown in Fig. 5, by which the covering for the rest may be conveniently removed when it is desired to change the same for cleansing or reversing the position of the rest when the occupant is still upon the bed. For that purpose the frame will be held in vertical position and slid with the bracket over the occupant of the bed.

This rest is adapted to be adjusted in inclination to any desired extent, and for that purpose the frame is provided at each side upon its outer edge with a series of pins or projections 19 which are disposed so as to be engaged by the lug or socket 20 carried by the frame 11 at its upper end as clearly shown in Fig. 4. As before described these arms at opposite sides are mounted upon the cross bar 10 resting in the brackets. Each of the arms is also provided with a bearing wheel 21 supported in a bracket 22 carried by one side of the arm so as to bear upon the inner face of the frame 7 to allow a smooth adjustment thereof when the rest is raised or lowered with the occupant or patient resting thereon. For the purpose of this raising or lowering these arms the handles 23 are extended from the free ends thereof in a convenient position to be grasped by the attendant.

In the operation of the invention, when the rest is in the position shown in Fig. 1 it is adapted to be adjusted longitudinally of the frame of the bed and also the rest frame held at any desired inclination as found convenient or desirable. If it be preferred to reverse the position of the supports, the bracket may be slid to the opposite end of the bed and the arms and supporting rod changed in position to the opposite socket so as to engage and retain the rest in adjusted position when reversed to the opposite side of the bracket from that shown in Fig. 1. As before described the means for supporting the fabric covering for the rest makes it very convenient for removal for cleansing or other purposes whenever found desirable.

Having now described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A back rest comprising opposite brackets mounted upon a frame each provided with a central framepivoting lug and arm pivoting lugs on opposite sides thereof, a rest frame pivotally mounted upon the central lug, and supporting arms pivotally mounted in one of the arm pivots of each bracket and adapted to engage a portion of each frame.

2. A bed rest comprising opposite brackets mounted upon the frame of a bed, 3r rest frame pivotally mounted upon said brackets and provided with adjusting projections therefrom, supporting arms pivotally mounted upon the brackets and having a seat to receive said projections, and bearing rollers carried by said arms to travel upon the under surface of said rest frame.

3. A bed rest comprising opposite brackets mounted upon the frame of a bed, a rest frame pivotally mounted upon said brackets, supporting arms pivotally mounted upon the brackets to engage a portion of said frame, bearing rollers carried by said arms to travel upon the under surface of said rest frame, and a tension spring disposed between the rest frame and a pivoting lug therefor upon said bracket.

4. In a back rest, a supporting bracket provided with a socket adapted to engage the frame of a bed, a pivoting lug at its upper end, and oppositely disposed lugs at its lower portion provided with bearing sockets therein.

5. In a back rest, a supporting bracket provided with a socket adapted to engage the frame of a bed, a pivoting lug at its upper end, oppositely disposed lugs at its lower portion provided with hearing sockets therein, a back frame mounted in said pivoting lugs, and a supporting arm mounted in said bearing lugs to engage said rest frame.

6. A back rest comprising a supporting bracket provided with a bearing socket, a rest frame pivotally mounted upon said bracket, a series of adjusting projections extending laterally from said rest frame, and a supporting arm pivotally mounted upon the bracket and provided with a socket to engage one of said projections.

7. A back rest comprising a Supporting bracket provided with a bearing socket, a rest frame pivotally mounted upon said bracket, a projection extending laterally from said rest frame, a supporting arm pivotally mounted upon said bracket and provided with a bearing lug to engage said projection, and a roller carried by said arm to engage one side of the rest frame.

8. A back rest comprising a supporting bracket pro vided with a bearing socket, a rest frame pivotally mounted upon said bracket, a projection extending laterally from said rest frame, a supporting arm piyotally mounted upon said bracket and provided with a bearing lug to engage said projection, a roller carried by said arm to engage one side of the rest frame, a covering detachably secured to said rest frame, and handles extending from the free ends of said arms.

9. In a back rest, a supporting frame, brackets having sockets to embrace an edge of said frame and each provided with a pivoting lug at its upper portion, a rest frame having oppositely extending free ends mounted in said lugs, and coiled tension springs surrounding the free ends of said frame and bearing at one end thereon and at their other end outwardly against the inner face of said lug.
