Description

June 2-5, 1929. H, RITTER y 1,7181665 ADJUSTABLE BED CLOTHES SUPPOT Y Filed April 6, 1927 QrrI'eRZZ-zn Patented .lune 25, 1929.
HARRIET RITTER, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
ADJUSTABLE BED-CLOTHES SUPPORT.
Application `filed April 6,
rlhis invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for beds, and
more particularly to a bed clothes support which may be adjustably secured to the bed and the primary object of the .invention is to provide a simple and efficient device of this character, which will enable the bed clothes to be supported above the occupant of the bed so that said occupant will be relieved of the constant pressure exerted by Il l) the bed clothes.
It is a well known fact that persons confined to the bed lind the pressure of bed clothing quite irritating and my invention contemplates a provision of a means to support the bed clothes above the body of the occupant of the bed, and further contemplates means for the adjusting of the support so that the bed clothing may be raised and lowered with respect to the occupant.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a support of the character described which is provided with spring clips capable of ready application or removal to the side bars or frame of the bed, enabling the device to be attached or detached at will, said clips being also of a nature to allow the entire device to be so adjusted as to lie flat on the bed bar and to be completely out of the way, but ready for readjustment and use at any time.`
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a support comprising few and simple parts, `which will positively carry out the purposes for which the invention is designed.
A still further object resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
llVith these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
i Referring to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my improved device applied to use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged end elevation of the device removed.
Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the same removed.
1927. Serial No. 181,505.
Referring to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, l designates a bed of the usual or any preferred type provided with the side rails 2.
Inpapplying my improved invention to use I desire to provide a pair of supports, one on each side of the bed, vbut for` convenience I shall describe a single support and it will be understood that the description applies to botl'i-elements constituting this support as they are identical in construction.
My improved support comprises an upper angle bar 3 which may be of any desired length having pivoted to the vertical wall thereof adjacent its ends the two supporting arms 4- and 5. Pivotally secured to the inner faces of the lower ends of the supporting arms 4 and 5 are the channel-shaped clamping or gripping members 6 and 7, respectively, the pivot connection to the latter being adjacent the outer opposed ends thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. These channel-shaped gripping members 6 and 7 have the inner walls thereof, that is, the walls thereof opposite the pivot connections directed inwardly from the upper to the lower edges thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 and the lower free edges of said walls thereof are bent outwardly and upwardly as shown at 8.
The bent edges of the clips or gripping members 6 and 7 permit said members to be slipped readily onto the side rails 2 of the bed and when forced into position said gripping members will obviously clamp the whole support in upright position on the bed. The spring tension of the gripping members is afforded through the material of which same are formed and the inwardly bent walls thereof as previously described.
These clamping or gripping members may be quickly and readily applied to the side rails of the bed or removed as desired and are capable of being adjusted longitudinally on the rails so that the upper supporting bar 3 may be at any height desired. As there are two of such supports in use on the bed, one on each side, it is obvious that the bed clothing may be properly supported above the occupant of the bed. The horizontal portion of the angle bar 3 being directed inwardly over the bed affords a flat surface upon which the bed clothing may rest.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device, the operation thereof and its :application fto kuse will loe-readily understood and it will `be seen that I have provided a simple7 ineX- pensive and eicientmeans for carrying.- out the objects of the invention.
While I have particularly described jt-he elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is fobviousthat various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details fof 'construction may beV resorted vto Awithoutdeparting from :the s irit or sacrificingany ofithe principles vo v the invention.
Having lthusA describedfmy invention; what I claim 4isc-- Y YAn 'attachment for a 'bed -adepted to 'sup- "port bed fclothingg comprisingan angle bar member, armsnpivota'lly vconnected -at one "members, whereb -end with =the end portions ofthe bar member' endet the'outer sidemrface of one ange thereof, U-shaped clamp members of resilient materiell ,pivot-ally connected with the outer ends of the arms, the points of Apivotalconnection between the arms and the cla-mp members being,r nearer one end edge of--the clamp members than the other, and at the outer side surfaces of the clamp said points bf 4pivotal 'connection-are disposed below theulpper edge of=- a bed rail, Jwhen .thentmchnnent is --a'pplied to the'bed and the -nngle -bur and the clampv Amembers are'disposed ntfthe same sideof the arms.
' Inftestimony whereof I r'my signature.
I`:HARRIET RITTER.
