To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. GREER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greeley, in the county of Greeley and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification.

This invention appertains to head-rests for barbers, dentists, and surgeons chairs in which provision is had for enabling the head of the person operated upon to be turned to any desired position for convenience both of the operator and the person to be operated upon.

I In accordance with this invention the headrest comprises an adjustable bar, a frame angularly adjustable with reference to said bar, rollers applied to said frame, and an endless belt supported by said rollers and adapted to receive the head of the person when the device is in use.

The invention consists, essentially, of the novel mountings of the frame, the means for securing same when turned to support the head at the required inclination, and the adjunctive parts cooperating with the mountings and securing means.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for efiecting' the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.

While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a headrest embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section thereof about on the line X X of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the head-rest. Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the frame and mountings, the parts being separated and arranged in a group. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the upper or head portion of the bar on a larger scale. Fig. 6 is a section about on the line Y Y of Fig. 5.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The head-rest is adapted to be applied to a barbers or dentists chair in the usual manner by means of bar 1, same being vertically adjustable to regulate the elevation of the head-rest to suit the convenience of the person to be operated upon. Bar 1 is provided at its upper end with a head attachment, same being preferably formed of sections 2 and 3, having shank portions embracing opposite sides of bar 1 and clamped thereto. Each section 2 and 3 is provided at its upper end with an enlarged portion, which when the sections are together form the head proper. The meeting faces ofthe upper part of sections 2 and 3 are grooved to receive the horizontal portion 4 of the frame-supporting rollers 5 and endless belt 6 and to receive a toothed wheel 7, secured to part 4. The section 3 has its upper portion slotted, as shown at 8, to receive dog 9, which cooperates with toothed wheel 7, so as to hold the frame in an adjusted position. The upper part of section 2 is provided upon its outer side adjacent to the joint with a recess 10, which intersects the groove or recess formed in the inner side to receive toothed wheel 7. A T- fitting 11 is secured in recess and the upper end of the intersecting groove and projects beyond part 2 to enter slot 8 a distance to make contact with dog 9 and cooperate therewith to close the upper portion of said slot 8 and prevent entrance of dirt or foreign matter into the hollow or grooved portion of the head attached to bar 1. Spring 12 is secured at one end to the stem of the T-fitting 11 and is adapted to exert pressure upon dog 9 to hold same in engagement with teeth of part 7, so as to secure the frame when adjusted to the required angular position.

The frame supporting rollers 5 comprise horizontal portion 4, diverged parts 13, and parallel extensions 14, which constitute the journals upon which the rollers 5 are mounted. Collars or stops 15 are provided at the lower ends of journals 14C to limit the downward movement of rollers 5, and one or both of said rollers is provided at its upper end with crankhandle 16 for convenience of rotating the The belt 6 may be of textile or any suitable material and is moved by turning either one of the rollers 5, thereby enabling the operator to adjust the head of the person operated upon without requiring the placing of the hands upon the head to properly position the same.

The vertical adjustment of the head-rest is effected by moving bar 1 up or down in the accustomed manner, and the inclination or angular adj ustmentis brought about by turning the frame in the mountings at the upper end of bar 1, dog 9 cooperating with toothed wheel 7 to hold the frame'in the adjusted position. 7

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a head-rest, and in combination with the bar and the frame journaled thereto and provided with head-supporting means, a head attachment applied to said bar and composed of sections grooved or recessed in their meeting faces to receive said frame and constitute a mounting therefor, a toothed wheel applied to said frame and housed by said head attachment, and a dog applied to said attachment and cooperating with the toothed wheel to hold the frame in an adjusted position, substantially as set forth.

2. In a head-rest, and in combination with the bar and frame j ournaled thereto provided with the head-supporting means, a head attachment applied to said bar and composed of sections grooved or recessed in their meeting faces to receive said frame,a toothed wheel secured to the frame and located within said head attachment, a dog cooperating with the toothed wheel to hold the frame in an adjusted position, and stops applied to the frame and embracing opposite sides of the head attachment, substantially as set forth.

3. In combination, a bar, a frame j ournaled to the bar and provided with head-supporting means, a sectional head attachment clamped to opposite sides of said bar and grooved or recessed in their meeting faces to receive said frame, one of the sections having a recess and the other section having a slot, a toothed wheel secured to the frame and located'within the head attachment, a dog pivoted in said slot and cooperating with the toothed wheelto hold the frame in an adjusted position, a T- fitting secured in said recess and having a portion extended into the slot and adapted to make contact with said dog, and a spring secured to said T- fitting and exerting a pressure against the dog, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
