SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,465,'dated March 31, 1896. Application filed October 4, 1895. Serial No. 564,647. (No model.)

Be it known that I, HARRY VIARD, of S yracuse, in the county 'of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in cultivators, and has for its object the production of a device which is simple in construction, readily adjustable, and highly eicient in operation; and to this end it consists, essentially, in the construction of the framebars and the tooth-supports.
It also consists in the det-ail construction and arrangement of the parts of the cultivater, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In describing thisinvention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figures l and 2 are respectively a top plan and side elevation of my improved cultivator. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, partly in elevation, taken on line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4is a horizontal detail section taken on line 4 4, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the detached central frame-bar of the cultivator.
The frame of my cultivator preferably consists of the central bar a, adjustable side bars d a', and spreader-bars Ca2. Suitable handles d3 are secured to the bar a, and an actuatinglever CL4 is connected by a link a5 to a head a, which is movable lengthwise of the bar a and is connected to the spreader-bars for operating the same. A locking-lever a7 is hinged at one extremity to a standard as, projecting upwardly from the bar d, and is provided at its opposite end with teeth for engaging a shoulder o upon the head a, and thereby holding said head in its adjusted position. A spring al@ holds the locking-lever a7 in operative position, and a hand-lever a, pivoted to the actuating-lever d4, is suitably connected to the locking-lever co7 for withdrawing the same from operative position against the action of the spring am.
The connection between the levers a7 all may be of suitable construction, but preferably consists of a link cl2, havingl one end hinged to the lever a7 and its upper end passed through an upright slot @L12 in the lever a and provided with a longitudinally adjustable shoulder a, arranged in a substantially horizontal aperture L15 in the lever a, which is provided with upper and lower faces for engaging the shoulder ali. rlhe adjustable connection of the lever a and the link C02 is quite important, as the ready adjustment of the operation of the locking-lever a7 is thereby effected by very simple means easily operated when desired.

The separate sections of the bar a are lirmly secured together and their peculiar construction forms apertures d20 C021 in front and at the rear of the front contiguous portions al? of said sections. The side frame-bars a' a are formed with engaging faces C022, arranged one in advance of the other and disposed in convex and concave planes extending lengthwise of said framebars.
B B are the .teeth of my improved cultivator, which are preferably composed of spring material and are formed substantially C- shaped, and O O are tooth-supports for securing said teeth to the frame-bars oy d. As best seen at Fig. l, only one tooth is secured to the frame-bar a., and the tooth-support O for said tooth is secured to the front contiguous portions al of the separate sections of said frame-bar, and consequently the front bow portion and rear extremity 'of said tooth are arranged in advance and at the rear of said contiguous portions. It will also be noted upon reference to Fig. l that the front bow portions and rear extremities of the teeth secured to the frame-bars a are arranged, respectively, in advance and at the rear of the curved engaging faces C022.
The tooth-supports C preferably consist of opposite sections c c', having the adjacent faces of their lower ends provided with grooves c2 for receiving the attaching ends of the teeth B and their upper ends arranged on opposite sides of the frame-bars and formed with upper and lower shoulders c2 for engaging the upper and lower edges of said framebars. The sections of the tooth-supports secured to the side bars a are formed with concave and convex engaging faces cl c5 bearing against the corresponding faces a" of said frame-bars. The lower ends of the toothsupport sections are securely clamped against the attaching ends of the teeth B by clampingbolts c6, and the upper ends of said sections are held in their adjusted position by clamping-bolts c7, passed through the frame-bars and having their opposite ends arranged in slots cs, formed in the upper ends of the toothsupport sections and extending lengthwise of said frame-bars.
It will be obvious that owing to the peculiar construction of the engaging faces of the side frame-bars a and the tooth-supports mounted thereon the inclination of the diggingpoin ts of the corresponding teeth is varied, as said tooth-supports are adjusted lengthwise of the line of draft.
D is the land-wheel for the cultivator, and E a support for said land-wheel, consisting of opposite sections or bars arranged on opposite sides of the front bow portion I) of the central tooth B and having their rear ends pivoted at e to the frame-bar a. Interposed between the central portions of the bars of said support is an upwardly-projectingarm e', provided with perforations for receiving a pin, (not illustrated,) which is passed through a perforation @21 in said support when hand adjustment thereof is not desired. The support E is adjusted by an actuating-lever-E, which is connected thereto by a link E2, and the lever E is formed with a downturned front end c3 and isprovided at its rear end with a locking-dog e4, which engages a toothed segment e5.
The operation of my improved cultivator will be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, and it will be particularly noted that the entire surface over which it is movable is uniformly and thoroughly worked, the draft equally distributed at all points, the teeth firmly secured in position, and the inclination of theirdigging-points readily adjusted, and the land-wheel easily adjusted without precludin g the use of a central tooth.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secu-re by Letters Patent, is
l. In a cultivator, the combination of a frame-bar provided with a curved engaging face, a spring-tooth, a tooth-support secured to the tooth and provided with a face bearing against the engaging face of the bar, and a slot extending lengthwise of the bar, and a clamping-bolt passed through said slot for adj ustably securing the tooth-support to the bar,substantially as and for the purpose speciiied. 4
2. In a cultivator, the combination of a frame-bar, a spring-tooth,a tooth-support'consisting of opposite sections having grooves in the adjacent faces of their lower ends for receiving and supporting the spring-tooth and having their upper ends movable lengthwise of the frame-bar, and a clamping-bolt for securing the tooth-support to the bar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a cultivator, the combination of a side frame-bar provided with engaging faces arranged one in advance of the other and disposed in convex planes extendinglengthwise of the frame-bar, spring-teeth formed substantially C-shaped and having their front bow portions and their rear extremities arranged in advance and at the rear of the en gaging faces, tooth-supports each consisting of opposite sections having grooves in the adjacent faces of their lower ends for receiving and supporting the corresponding teeth, and having their upperends provided with shoulders for engaging the frame-bar, concave engaging faces bearing against the convex engaging faces of the frame-bar and slots extending lengthwise of said frame-bar, clamping-bolts for drawing the lower ends of said sections together, and clainping-bolts passed through said frame-bar and slots fordrawin together the upper ends of said sections and securing the same to the frame-bar, substantially as described.

In a cultivator, the combination of a frame provided with a longitudinally-extending substantially central aperture, and a spring-tooth supported on the frame and arranged within said aperture substantially coincident with a line drawn through the longitudinal center of the frame, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a cultivator,` the combination of a frame-bar having an inwardly-deflected portion and outwardly-deflected portions in advance and at the rear of the former portion, a tooth-support secured to the inwardly-deflected portion, and a cur-ved spring-tooth secured to said support and having its front bow portion and its rear extremity arranged in advance and at the rear of said inwardlydeflected portion of the bar and at the inner sides of the outwardlydeflected portions thereof, substantially as and forthe purpose set forth.
6. In a cultivator, the combination of a frame-bar consisting of separate sections having front and rear contiguous portions secured together, and outwardly-extending portions arranged in advanceand at the rear of the front contiguous portions for forming apertures in said bar, a tooth having its front bow portion and its rearv extremity passed between said outwardlyextending portions, and a tooth-support secured to the front contiguous portions of the frame-bar sections and to the tooth, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. In a cultiva-tor, the combination of a frame-bar having an inwardly-deiiected portion and outwardly-deflected portions in advance and at the rear of the former portion, a tooth-support secured to the inwardly-de- IOO IIO
iiected portion, and a curved spring-tooth secured to said support and having its front bow portion and its rear extremity arranged in advance and at the rearof said inwardlydeflected portion of the bar and at the inner sides of the outwardlydeflected portions thereof, a land-wheel support having separate sections arranged on opposite sides of said tooth, and an actuating-lever connected to said land-wheel support for operating the same, substantially as described.
8. In a cultivator, the combination of a frame-bar consisting of separate sections having front and rear contiguous portions secured together, and outwardly-extending portions arranged in advance and at the rear of the front contiguous portions for forming apertures in said bar, a tooth having its front bow portion and its rear extremity passed between said outwardly-extending portions, and a tooth-support secured to the front contiguous portions of the frame-bar sections and to the tooth, a land-wheel support having separate sections arranged on opposite sides of said tooth, an actuating-lever having a depending arm pivoted to the frame-bar, and a connection or link consisting of separate sections arranged on opposite sides of said tooth and having their front extremities pivoted to the land-wheel support and their rear extremities to said depending arm, substantially as and for the purpose described.
9. In a cultivator,the combination of framebars, a movable head and an actuating-lever for moving said head; with a movable locking-lever or bar having one end hinged and the other end engaged with said head, a handlever pivoted to the actuating-lever, and a link having one end connected to the lockinglever and its other end adj ustably connected to said actuating-lever, substantially as set forth.
10. In a cultivator, the combination of frame-bars, a movable head, and an actuating-lever for moving said head; with a movable locking -lever or bar having one end hinged and the other end engaged with said head, a hand-lever pivoted to the actuatinglever and provided with an upright slot and a substantially horizontal aperture, a link having one end connected to the locking-lever and its other end passed through the slot and aperture, and a shoulder arranged in said aperture and movable lengthwise of the link, substantially as described.
