UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I JAMES FRANKLIN HARRIS, OF NIX, ALABAMA.
PEOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,502, dated May 23, 1899.
Application filed December 80, 1898- Seiial No. 700,735. (No modell) To to whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES FRANKLIN HAR- BIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nix, in the county of Etowah and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in plows.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of plows, and to increase their strength, durability, and efficiency, and to enable them tobe conveniently adjusted to vary the distance between the plow-beams for cultivating rows of different widths.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and
pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the plow-standards. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the L=shaped sections of the adjustable frames.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a plow-beam, designed to be constructed either of wood or metal, and arranged at opposite sides of it are front and rear laterally-extending frames 2 and 3,which carry plow- standards 4 and 5, located at opposite sides of the plow and at different points on the plow-beam. The front standard-carrying frame 2, which is substantially rectangular, as shown, is provided at its front and rear portions with L-shaped sections 6 and 7, extending longitudinally of the plow-beam and projecting in advance and in rear of the rectangular frame 2. The front and rear portions of the frame 2 are perforated for the reception of bolts 8 and 9, which pass through slots 10 and 11 of the outwardly-extending arms of the L-shaped sections 6 and 7 ,whereby the frame 2 is adjustably connected with the plow-beam and is adapted to be moved inward and outward to arrange the standard 4 the desired distance from the beam. The slots 10 and 11 permit the adjustment of the frame 2 without removing the bolts 8 and 9, which are provided with nuts for clamping the front and rear portions of the frame.
The L-shaped section 6, which is arranged at the front of the frame 2, is detachably secured to the beam 1 by bolts 12, which permit the removal of the section for a purpose hereinafter described. The rear section 7 is similarly secured to the beam by transverse bolts 13, which also serve as the fastening devices for securing the front section 14 of the frame 3, which is constructed similar to the frame 2 and is capable of horizontal adj ustment to arrange its standard 5 the proper distance from the plow-beam. The sides of the frame 3 are provided with front and rear bolts 15 and 16, and the L-shaped brackets or sections 14 and 17 have slots 18 and 19 for the reception of the bolts 15 and 16. The rear section or bracket 17 is secured to the plow-beam, at the rear end thereof, by transverse bolts 20, which are extended sufiiciently beyond the opposite side of the beam to enable them to serve as the means for attaching the section or bracket 7 to the beam should it be desired to arrange the laterally-disposed frames opposite each other.
The upper portions of the standards 4 and 5 are forked or bifurcated and are fulcrumed on bolts 21 and 22, which pass through the sides of the fork or bifurcation and the outer portions of the adjustable frames, being located a sufficient distance from the upper ends of the standards to form pivots to permit the standards to be arranged at the proper angle. The upper ends of the side standards 4 and 5 are slightly enlarged and are provided with perforations 23 and 24, preferably ar ranged in pairs, as shown, and adapted to receive bolts 25 and 26, which secure the side standards at the desired adjustment.
The longitudinal arms of the sections or brackets7 and 14 of the front and rear frames are located opposite each other, and the fastening devices 13, which connect those parts, also serve as the means for adj ustably mounting a central standard 27 on the plow-beam. The central standard 27, which is constructed similar to the other standards, has its upper portion bifurcated and arranged at opposite sides of the longitudinal arm of the bracket or section 14, one of the bolts 13-the rear oneforming the pivot of the said standard 27. The other bolt 13 passes through one of a pair of perforations 28 of each of the sides of the bifurcation of the standard 27, and the latter, which is detachable, may be arranged at the rear end of the plow on the bolts 20 should it be desired to bring the adjustable frames opposite each other and have the central standard in rear of the side ones.
The plow is provided with handles 29, constructed in the ordinary manner and having the lower ends of the handle-bars arranged at opposite sides of the beam and secured to the same at a point within the rear adjustable frame by bolts 30, which also serve as a means for securing a pair of cuffs 31 to the handles for supporting'and reinforcing the same.
The invention has the following advantages: The plow, which is simple and inexpensive in construction, is strong and durable and is capable of being readily adjusted to arrange the standards in the desired position and to space them properly to fit the width of the rows to be cultivated.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What is claimed is- 1. A plow comprising a beam, the front and rear adjustable frames arranged at opposite sides of the beam and provided with front and rear L'-shaped sections or brackets secured to the beam and having adjustable connections with the frames, the longitudinal portions or arms of the rear section of the front frame and the front section of the rear frame being located opposite each other and having fastening devices common to both, a central standard secured to the beam by such fastening devices, and side standards mounted on the front and rear frames at the-outer sides thereof, substantially as described;
2. A plow comprising a beam, front and rear rectangular frames provided with front and rear L-shaped brackets and adj ustably connected with the same, the adjacent brackets of the frames being located at opposite sides of the beam and having fastening 13 common to both of them, a central standard having a bifurcated upper portion fulcrumed on one of the fastening devices 13 and adj ustably secured by the other, said central standard having its bifurcated portions straddling the longitudinal arm of one of the adjacent brackets, and the side standards mounted in the frames, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES FRANKLIN HARRIS.
