Patented July 9, 18

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
WILLIAM S. LAVVRENOE, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO MARTHA J. LAWRENCE, OF SAME PLACE. p
LEVER CULTIVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,614, dated July 9, 1895.
Application filed April 8, 1895. Serial No. 544,947. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. LAWRENCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at'the city of Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lever Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lo cultivators, and more particularly to improvements in lever cultivators.
The objects of my invention are, first, to simplify the construction of lever cultivators; second, to provide an improved means of adjusting the spread of cultivators; third, to provide an improved means of attaching the lever to operate the wings of the cultivator; fourth, to provide improved means of connecting the parts of a lever cultivator together, so that they shall form a perfectly rigid implement in whatever position the parts may be adjusted. I accomplish these objects of my invention by the devices and means shown in the accompanying drawings,
2 5 in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends 0 of the section-lines.
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A represents the central bar of the cultivator. A A represent the side bars or wings of the same, which are pivotally connected to the central bar A, toward the forward end, so that the wings or side bars A can be swung away from or toward the center for adjustment, as, required. Project- 0 ing up from toward the rear of the center bar A are bars B B, which are firmly secured to the same. The handles H are secured to the center bar A in the usual form and project upwardly and backwardly, and are secured 5 by appropropriate braces to the upright parallel bars B B, so that they are held very securely in place. Adjustable up and down between the bars B B is a slide 1. To the slide I are connected links F F, which project downwardly and laterally and are pivotally connected at r to the wings or side bars A A of the cultivator, the links of course being pivotally connected at the upper end to the slide I. To the side of the central bar A are secured on suitable ears, as at n n, links G, the same being pivotally connected and projecting upwardly andoutwardly and are also pivotallyconnected tothe central portion of the links F at the pivot 'n. Between the upper ends of the parallel bars B is secured a bent 6o lever C onthe pivot a. A segment D is sup ported on one of the bars to one side. A suitable catch on the bent lever C, operated by a suitable hand-grip, permits of an adjustment of the lever back and forth. The lower end of the lever G is bent rearwardly and is pivotally connected by the link E to the slide I by the pivots z and i. It will be observed that this construction greatly simplifies the construction of lever cultivators. Very little 7c is added to the ordinary cultivator beyond the lever O, and the construction is extremely'effective it not depending upon the weight of the cultivator for its ease of operation; but the force of the lever is so well applied and at such a convenient point that it is sure to operate the wings of the cultivator every time with little expenditure of power and permits of a positive adjustment of the same.
Different means can be employed for adjusting my improved slide I, with its connec tion to the wings A A of the cultivator; but I prefer the construction I have shown, and know from my long experience, that it possesses great superiority. 8
In Fig. 2 the dotted lines show the manner of adjusting the wings to different widths by simply raising and lowering the slide I. The manner of raising and lowering theslide I is shown in dotted linesin Fig. 1. 9o
.I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination in a cultivator, of a central tooth bearing bar, A; lateral tooth 5 bearing bars or wings, A, pivotally connected to the'forward part of said bar, A; parallel vertical bars, B, B, secured to the central bar, A, and projecting upwardly therefrom; handles, H, secured to said central bar and by r 0 suitable braces to the upwardly projecting bars, B, B; a slide, I, adapted to slide between the bars, B, B, which serve as aguideway for the same; links, F, F, pivoted to said slide, I, and to the wings, A, A, by the pivots, 7',- links, G, G, pivoted 0n suitable cars at n, n, to the central bar, A, and to the central portion of the links, F, F, by pivots, n; the bent adjusting lever, O, pivoted at ct between the upper ends of the vertical bars, B; and the link, E, connecting the said lever, C, and slide, I, together at pivots, t, 1'', all co-acting together substantially as described for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, in a cultivator, of a central tooth bearing bar, A; lateral tooth bearing bars or Wings, A,pivotally connected to the forward part of said bar, A; a Vertical standard secured to the central bar, A, and projecting, upwardly therefrom; a slide, I, operating in said standard; links, F, F, connecting the slide, in said standard and the wings to each side together; links, G, pivoted to the central tooth bearing bar and to the central portion of the links, F, F,and suitable means of adjusting the slide, I, to vary the width of the cultivator, as specified.
3. The combination, in a cultivator, of a central tooth bearing bar, A; lateral tooth bearing bars or wings, A, pivotally connected to the forward part of said bar, A; a vertical standard secured to the central bar, A, and
projecting upwardly therefrom; suitable handles attached to the central bar and by suitable braces to the central standard; a slide, I, operating in said standard; links, F, F, connecting the slide in said standard and wings to each side together; links, G, pivoted to the central tooth bearingv bar and to the central portions of the links, F, F; and suitable means of adjusting the slide, I, to vary the width of the cultivator, as specified.
4. The combination, in a cultivator, of a central standard; a slide, 1, adjustable along said standard; link connections from said slide to the lateral wings of the cultivator; a
bent lever, O, to the upper end of said standard connected by suitable link, E, to the slide, I; a notched segment, D,on which said lever, O, is adjusted by means of a suitable catch, for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
