ANDREAS KOSTOLNIK, OF SHARPSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA HAT AND COAT RACK.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1907.
Application filed Marcil 6,1907. serial No. 360,846.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREAS KosToLNIK, a subject ofthe King of Hungary, residing at Sharpsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat and Coat Racks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a combined coat and hat rack, and the invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive rack for firmly holding a coat and hat, whereby either article cannot be surreptitiously removed.
To this end, I have devised a wall rack for holding a coat and hat, also an umbrella rack, the rack being easily and quickly manipulated to rmly hold the coat and hat. In this connection, my improved Irack is particularly designed for hotels, restaurants, clubs and such places where hats and coats are temporarily disposed of.
With the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved rack, Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the same, illustrating a coat and hat carried thereby, Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the rack showing a slightly modified form of construction, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation, partly broken away of the form of rack shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
To put my invention into practice, l provide a suitable support, or wall plate 1 adapted to be secured to a wall or similar support, as by screws 2. This plate is provided with an outwardly-extending hook-arm 3, from the outer end of which is suspended a coat rack 4 comprising a top cross head 5 and depending side arms G, the latter provided near their lower ends with slots 7. The hat holder 8 is suspended from the coat holder 4, and comprises an end-arm 9 carrying a stationary hat-ring 10, and a swinging hat ring 11, these hat rings being adapted to clamp the brim of a hat between them, as seen in Fig. 2, the crown of the hat projecting through the clamping-ring 11. In order that the hat clamping-ring 11 may swing, it is provided on one side of its periphery with an extension 11, the
Y outer end of which is pivoted in one end of the endarm 9. In the other end oi said end-arm 9 is pivoted a supporting bar 12 which extends through the slots 7 in the side arms 6, and thus supports the hat rack.
The stationary hat clamping-ring 10 is supported from the end-arm 9 by an extension 10 projecting from one side of the periphery thereof, the opposite side of the periphery of said hat clamping- rings 11 and 10 being provided with extensions 14 and 15 respectively. The extension 14 carries a keeper 16 which extends through an opening provided therefor in the extension 15, and through an opening 18 provided therefor in the supporting-bar 12, the said keeper being provided near its free end with an opening to receive the hasp of an ordinary padlock 19. In order that an umbrella may also be locked in the supporting rack, I provide the extension 14 with a pin 20 adapted to span the space between the extensions 14 and 15. The stick of an umbrella may therefore be placed between the pin 2() and the keeper 16 and will be supported by said pin and keeper, and also locked against removal until the hat clamping-ring l1 is swung outwardly.
To place a coat upon the rack, the hat holder 8 is removed, the side arms 6 are passed through the sleeves of the coat, and the shoulders of the latter hung over the cross head 5. The bar 12 of the hat rack is then inserted into the openings 7 of the arms 6, the hat is placed with the brim against the'hat ring 10, and the ring 11 is closed over the crown of the hat as seen in Fig. 2, the keeper passing through extension 15 and through opening 18 in the bar 12, and the lock 19 is then engaged with the keeper to hold the parts in locked position.
The modification illustrated in Fig. 4 ofthe drawings is substantially the same as to construction of the hat rack, the cross head 5 being in this construction, however, so supported that a coat may be placed in engagement with the coat rack the reverse of the manner shown and just described for Fig. 2, that is, with the back of the coat towards the Wall or support of the rack. It will be evident that if the arm 3 is of sufficient length to support the cross head 5 at a considerable distance from the wall or other support, the hat holder may be reversed when engaging the same with the coat holder, so that the hat holder will lie between the arms G and the wall instead oi on the outer side of said arms as shown.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a hat and coat rack, a supporting arm, a coat rack comprising a cross head carried by said supporting arm, and side arms depending from the ends of said cross head and provided near their lower ends with openings, and a hat rack comprising an end-arm, a supporting bar pivoted at its one end in' said end-arm, and received in the openings in the side arms of said coat rack and having an opening near its free end, a stationary hat clamping-ring carried by said end-arm having an extension provided with an opening, aswinging hat clamping-ring pivoted to said end-arm adapted when closed to clamp a hat between the same and the stationary ring, a keeper carried hy said swinging ring to project through the `opening in the extension of the stationary ring and through the opening in said supporting bar, and means for securing said keeper.
2. In a device of the type described, a coat support embodying a cross head and depending side arms, and :1 hat support comprising a supporting bar extending through openings provided therefor in said side arms, an end-arm to which the supporting bar is connected at one end, :1 stationary hat ring carried by said end-arm, a swinging hat ring carried by said end-arm, an extension carried by the stationary hat ring, a keeper carried by the swinging hat ring adapted to pass through said extension and through the supporting bar, and a. lock for securing said keeper to hold the swinging hat ring in closed position.
In testimony whereof I ilfx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
