UNITED STATES PATENT Prion.
COAT AND UMBRELLA SUSPENDING RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,670, dated December 14, 1897. Application filed February 6, 1897. Serial No. 622,273. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. CHAMBERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Apollo, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coat and Umbrella Suspending Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in coat and umbrella racks or holders, the object being to provide a device of improved construction having mechanism whereby a coat and umbrella may be locked, so as to prevent theft of these articles.
To this end my invention consists in asuspending-hook having a hasp or loop-shaped extremity adaptedto be locked, so as to confine the umbrella in the loop portion thereof, and a chain adapted to be passed through a sleeve of the coat and secured by the same look that holds the umbrella hasp or loop in locked position.
My invention also consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will'be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the appended claim;
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of an umbrella and coat holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing the umbrella-holder closed. Fig. 3 is a top view showing the umbrella-holder open to admit an umbrella, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the device disconnected from the baseblock. Fig. 5 is a view of the chain.
Like figures of reference designate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a v base-block adapted to be attached to the wall of a building or any other suitable support.
The numeral 2 designates a suspendinghook,of ordinary or well-known construction, projecting from the vertical cross portion of a horizontally-arranged T-shaped plate 3,- provided at one side thereof with openings 4. Staples 5, passing through said openings and into the base-block 1, hinge or pivot said plate and suspending-hook thereto. Instead of employing these staples, the said plate 3 may be formed with a hinge-leaf portion of suitable construction. Projecting from the opposite edge of the plate 3 is an umbrellaholder having a loop portion 6, adapted to receive and confine an umbrella and provided with a lateral extension 7, having a horizontal or cross slot 8 therein, through which, when the umbrella-holder is closed, a staple 9'projects. A chain 10 is provided at opposite ends with rings 11, and this chain may be of any length suitable for the purpose.
In practice when it is desired to confine an umbrella alone in the holder the device is moved to one side on the staples '5, and then the umbrella is placed in position between the base-block and loop 6, and the device is then brought to its normal position against the base-block, so as to cause the umbrella to be clamped between said block and loop. In order to lock the parts in this position,a padlock 12 is provided, the bow or hasp 13 of which is engaged with the staple 9 and locked. By this means the umbrella maybe securely held in position without danger of theft.
Whenever it is desired to look a coat suspended from the hook 2, the ring 11 at one end of the chain 10, is secured in the bow or hasp 13 of the padlock, and the other end of the chain is passed through the sleeve of the coat, and the ring 11 at that end is then also engaged with the said bow or hasp of the padlock, and then said bow or hasp is locked, thus securing the coat to the holder.
My invention provides a simple and efficient construction of coat and umbrella rack or holder to which the umbrella and coat may be locked, so that they cannot be removed by a thief or other unauthorized person unless said person is provided with a key to unlock the said padlock.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawings certain means for carrying my invention into practical effect, I desire it understood that I do not limit my invention to the specific construction of device which, for the sake of illustration, I have set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
tend through the said slot, a padlock adapted to engage the said staple to hold the plate in locked position, and a chain adapted to be passed through the sleeve of a coat and the ends thereof engaged by the hasp of the padlock, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
JAMES H. CHAMBERS.
