WILLIAM J. CARD, O F OLEAN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE V. FOREMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
HANDLE-LOCK FOR STAMPS'AND OTHER ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,685, dated August 17, 1886.
Application filed June 24, 1886. Serial No. 206,088. (No model.)
, To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. CARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olean, in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle-Locks for Stamps and other Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. v
. Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, the shackle shown locked. Fig. 2 is a like View, the shackle shown open; Fig. 3, a plan view, the upper plate of the lock proper re moved, disclosing the internal structure.
This device is designed for holding stamps and any other like article havin ga projecting handle, whereby the handle can be inserted in the place designed for its reception, and then looked therein as well as suspended thereby, so that no one not authorized can use the stamp or other article. Under ordinary circumstances such movable articles are placed in boxes, drawers,or other receptacles, or otherwise put beyond accidental or designed use by any one not authorized; but by my present invention the holder is attached to the wall adjacent to the desk, or to the desk itself, or in any other way or manner where it will be ready and convenient for individual use, either to secure the stamp or other article, or so thatit can be easily reached to release the said stamp or other article therefrom. In this way there is presented at very small cost a device that is a great desideratum and convenience.
Having thus generally stated the nature and object of my invention, I will now proceed to describe in detail its construction, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, A denotes alock made in any desired way and of any desired shape, so long as it has a recess or hollowed-out part, a, in
front, and has hinged to its front edge, ate, a curved shackle, B, which is adapted to close over said recess a, so as to form an opening of circular or oblong shape. This shackle has a hooked end, k, which enters the bolt-hole a of the body of the lock, and when pressed in engages upon the hooked end a of the spring 0 inside the body of the lock, and is thus held fast; but when occasion requires it can be released from said spring by inserting akey, D, into the key-hole a and pushing the spring away from the hooked end of the shackle, when the same can be swung around. The look as thus made is secured to the bracket E in any desired way.
It may be made separate from said bracket and riveted to it,'or one or more of the plates of the lock can be made integral with the bracket. In the detail of construction I propose to adopt in this respect the method that will be the cheapest and most economical. The bracket has suitable screw-holes, e, at top and bottom to enable it to be fastened in place; or, instead of fixing it in place by screws, a 6
hook can be provided at its upper end, by
means of which it can be suspended from the wall or on the desk or otherwise.
The method of using this device will not need much further explanation. The shackle 7c being swung back, the handle of the article to be confined and held is placed in the curved front recess of the lock, and the shackle closed over it and its end pushed in so that it shall engage with the lock-spring. Thus thestamp or other article is suspended and secured, and can only be disengaged by the person who has a proper key.
In the .mere detail of the lock I do not propose to confine myself to the exact structure now shown, forI may in some instancesas for a bank or insurance company-prefer a more complex structure of key and spring, so as to prevent the use of any key but one specially adapted to the exact structure of the particular lock; but in all usual cases any ordinary structure will answer, since it is seldom that the general visitors will have any key that could be used to unlock the keeper.
Having now described my invention, what 9:)
' I desire to secure by Letters Patent is A new article of manufacture, consisting of the bracket E, having secured thereto the lock A, which is hollowed out in frontand has a hinged shackle closing thereover hooked at the end, and a spring-catch hooked at its end and engaging on said shackle-hook.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM J. CARD.
