HENRY W. WILDER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LOCK.
Application filed August 27, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. l/VILDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in looks.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an improved lock especially designed for trunks, chests, or like receptacles, which is unusually strong, durable, simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.
Another object of my invention is to provide a lock which has no outwardly projecting parts, and which is also devoid of parts that may be pried off or asunder from other connecting parts.
Other and further objects of my invention will become readily apparent, to persons skilled in the art, from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the lock and receptacle to which it is applied, open. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing same closed. Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing parts broken away, in section. Fig. t is a section taken on line 4et of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 55 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is an insert.
In all the views the same reference characters are employed to indicate similar parts.
The lock plate 10 is generally semi-circular in outline and provided with a marginal flange or edge 11, by which it may be secured to a receptacle 12, by screws, rivets or the like, 13. The margin 11 may project from either the front or rear edge of the plate 10. In the first instance it would permit of mortising the lock within the body part ofthe receptacle 12. The plate 10 is provided with a vertically extending, preferably tapered recess 14, to receive a tongue 15. It is also provided with transversely extending recesses 16 and 17, crossing the vertical recess, to receive the transversely extending pivoted locking bar 18. The bar 18, on its pivoted end, is provided with laterally or vertically extending trunnions 1919 by which it is hinged to the plate. In part 20, of the recess 17 is a perforation which extends entirely through the plate 10 and at its upper and lower boundaries is pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

vided with hinge slots 2121 in which the trunnions 1919 pass. In placing the bar 18 in hinged position the entire bar is put through the opening 20 from the rear before application of the lock to the receptacle, and the trunnions 19 then pass into the slots or depressions 21 and an insert 22 is placed in the slot behind the trunnions, after the bar has been put in position, to prevent the hinged or pivoted end of the bar from being moved backwardly out of the opening 20. On the outer end of the locking bar 18 is secured a lock 23, adapted to be opened by insertion of the key 24.
The recess 14,-0f the locking plate is provided with a depression 25, below the part 26, for insertion of the lower tenon portion 27 of the tongue 15 when said tongue is within the recess, in locked position. The tongue 15 also contains a depression 28 within which the locking bar 18 neatly fits when the parts are in locked position, as shown in Fig. 2, the outer surfaces 29 and 30 of the bar at that time being flush with the outer surface of the lock plate 10. The presence of the depression 28, intermediate the parts 29 and 30, provides a projection 29 on the lower end of the locking bar, so that the tongue 15 may not be lifted from the recess 1a, in which it is contained, as long as the transverse locking bar is held in locked position. The upper portion 31, of the tongue 15, is also provided with a marginal flange or edge 32, in which fastening devices 33, such as screws, rivets or the like, may be used to secure the tongue to the top or cover portion 12 of the receptacle.
To unlock the lock and raise the top 12 from the body portion 12, of the receptacle to which the lock is applied, it is only necessary to insert the key 24: and cause the retraction of the bolt 23 of the lock 23, when the locking bar 18 may be swung upon its hinge l9 and withdrawn from the recesses 16 and 17 and the depression 28 in the tongue 18, after which the tongue may be readily lifted from the recess 14: in which it was contained. The procedure to lock the receptacle is equally simple, all that is required is to insert the tongue 15 in the recess 14 and close the transverse locking bar 18. The lock 23 shown mounted on the outer end of the transverse or looking bar 18, may be of any character desired. A spring lock is shown, but other forms may be used and other means of securing the locking bar 18 in position, than that shown, may be employed.
Having described my invention, What I claim is:
I 1. A lock comprising a plate having an open end recess to receive a tongue and a transverse recess to receive a locking bar; a tongue, having a depression, adapted to enter said recess and a locking bar hinged to the plate at one side of and Within said transverse recess and locked to the plate at the other side and terminating Within said recess and lying in the depression of the tongue when in locked position.
2. A look comprising a plate having an open end recess to receive a tongue, and a transversely extending recess closed at its ends to receive a locking bar and lock; a tongue, having a depression registering with said transverse recess, and a locking bar hinged at one end Within said transverse recess, a lock carried on the free end of the said locking bar Within the other end of said transverse recess to lock said bar to said plate When the bar is in the depression provided in the tongue.
3. A look comprising a plate having a vertica l recess to receive a tongue and a transversely extending recess to receive a locking bar, the latter recess extending through the plate at one end to provide an aperture having hinge depressions; a looking bar, adapted to pass outwardly through said aperture and having laterally extending coacting hinge members for engagement with said hinge depressions therein; a tongue to lie in the vertical recess and having a depression registering with the transverse recess to receive the locking bar and means to lock the bar at the other end of the transverse recess.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
HENRY WV. VVILDER. In the presence of LORETTA A. GIBBoNs, MARY F. ALLEN.
