la new and improved lock, more especially designed for use on handbags, valises, suit cases and other articles, and arranged to securely hold the article locked to enable ther owner to readily open the article whenever it is desired to do so, and to prevent pick-.
pockets and other unauthorized persons from surreptitiously opening. the article.
In order to produce the desiredresult, use is made of a series of spaced keepers Xed on one member of Vthe lock casing, a corresponding number of spring-pressed catches fulcrumed on the other member of the lock casing, and pins slidable in front of the lock casing member containing lthe catches and engaging the said catches to actuatethe same, sundry of the said catches being in engagement with their keepers and others being out of engagement with their keepers so that the lock cannot be opened unless only those pins are pressed which control the catches in engagement at the time with their keepers.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings 'orming a part of this specification, in which similar characters vof reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the lock; Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 4; Fig. 3 is a similar viewof the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 4; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line 444 of Fig. 5; and Fig. 5 is a cross section of the same on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings, the lock casing consists of members A and B, of which the member A is in the form of a fiat barwhile the member B is hollow and adapted to abut against one face of the member A. On this face of the member A are formed or secured a number of keepers C each having two openings C and C2 located one above the other. The lower openings C of the keeper C are adapted to be engaged by catches D fulcrumed at D on a plate B- arranged in Specification of Letters Patent.

Each c atch is pressed on by a spring E at one side of the fulcrum D and the `other side of the catch is pressed on by a pin F pro- ]ecting through an yopening in the front of 'the member B, as will be readily understood byV reference to Figs. l and 2. The pins F are each connected with a catch D by means of a dowel on the pin engaging a recess in the catch. The'catches D are so arranged that sundry of the same are normally out of engagement with their keepers while the re- .maining catches are normally in engagement withtleir keepers, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2, so that the two members A and B are normally locked together by those 'catches which vengage their corresponding keepers. pocket or other unauthorized person trying N ow it will be noticedr that a pickto open the lock cannot do so unless this person knows which ofthe pins F to press inward in order to swing the corresponding locking catches into open position, that is, out of engagement with their keepers, as otherwise the lock cannot be opened. It will further be noticed that when a pin, which controls a catch which is normally out of engagement with its keeper, is pressed then such catch moves into engagement lwith the keeper and consequently the lock is further locked by this catch and keeper.
As shown in Fig. 2, three catches D are normally in engagement with their keepers and consequently if only one or two of these catches are actu-ated by pressing the cor-r responding pins F the lock cannot be opened as the remaining locking catch still engages its keeper. In a like manner if any of the other pins controlling a normally open catch is pressed such catch is moved into locking position to prevent opening of t-he lock. By the arrangement described it is next to impossible for a pickpocket or other person to open the lock with one hand, as is so frequently the case with handbags and like articles providedv with the usual locking device.
The upper openings C2 of the two middle keepers C are adapted to be engaged by tongues G formed on a bolt Gr mounted to slide on top of the partition B2 secured in the member B, the said bolt G being controlled by a key adapted to be inserted through a keyhole B3 arranged in the top of the member B. The key is adapted to engage a keyhole pin H held on the partition B2 to permit of conveniently turning the key for moving the bolt G intoopen or closed position. The bolt G is pressed on by a spring I (see Fig. 4C) and the bolt is held against accidental movement by lugs B* and B5 struck up on the partition B2 and engagingcorresponding recesses in the un-` der side of the bolt G.
It will be noticed that the owner of the article provided with the lock can readily press the proper pins F with the ngers of one hand to disengage the corresponding catches D from their keepers to open the article, and it will lfurther be noticed that when the pressure onthe pins F is released the catches and their pins return immediately to normal position. When it is desired to permanently lock the article the bolt G is moved into locking position by the key. The catches D are alike in construction and may be interchanged so as to permit the user to change-the combination, iffdesired.
The lock shown and described is'simple and durable in construction and can be readily applied to variousarticles, it beingV understoodthat in case the lock is-attachedto handbags, valises and the like, the frame members of such articlesmay form Vthe mem-v .bers A and B.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A lock, comprising a lock casing having two members, a series of spacedV keepers .lock is normally locked and canl only be unlocked on simultaneously actuating all the catches normally in engagement with their keepers. K
2, A lock, comprising a lock casing having two members, a series of spaced keepers fixed on one casing member, a corresponding number of spring-pressed catches ulcrumed on the other casing member, pins slidable in the casing member and engaging the said catches to actuate the same, sundry V*of the said catches being normally in engagement with their keepers and the others being normally out of engagement with their keepers so that the' lock is normally locked and can be unlocked only on simultaneously actuating all the catches normally in engagement with their keepers, and a key-controlled bolt mounted to slide on the member engaging the said catches, the said bolt having prongs adapted to engage sundry of the said catches.
3. A lock, comprising a lock casino having a plate member and a hollow member provided with a partition, a. series of keepers held on the plate member and each having two openings opening into the hollow member above and below the partition, a series of spring-pressed catches fulcrumed in the hollow member below the partition to co-act ywith the corresponding openings in the keepers, pins slidable in the front of the hollow members and controlling the said catches, a key-controlled bolt in the hollow member above the partition and provided with tongues engaging corresponding openings in the keepers.

In a lock ot the character described, a casing having a plurality of openings in two opposing sides, a plate having a plurality Voi"` apertured keepers projecting into the casing through the openings in one side of the casing, a plurality of pivoted and spring pressed hook-shaped catches corresponding in number to the keepers, each catch being mounted on an independent pivot and adapted to engage one of the said keepers, vand pins slidable in the openings in the other side of the casing and engaging the catches, sundry of the catches being normally in engagement with their keepers and the others being normally out of engagement wit-h their keepers.
