Description
' Patented Apr. [0,1900. H. M. WINTER. BOX FASTENER.
WITNESSES:
" A TORMEYs NI'TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERIWIANN MAX WINTER, OF BLASEWITZ, GERMANY.
BOX-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 647,126, dated April 10, 1900. Application filed August 1, 1899. Serial No. 725,787. (No,model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IERMANN MAX WIN- TER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Blasewitz, near Dresden, in the Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices for Chests or Boxes, ofwhich the following is a specification.
The invention is designed more especially for the chests or boxes which are set outside the door of a house and in which bakers leave their goods, the object being to prevent tampering with the goods by other than a properly-authorized person.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view with part of the wall broken away, showing the box locked. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, show ing the box unlocked; and Fig. at is a view similar to Fig. 2, also showing the box unlocked.
In the drawings the box or chest is indicated by the letter a and is provided with a suitable hinged cover g, having a locking tongue or bolt h. The front of the box is provided with a compartment or recess in which is pivotally mounted a locking-lever having ahooked upper end which is normally pressed into engagement with the bolt h by a spring 6. A small section of the bottom of the boxfis hinged at one edge, as shown, and is provided with a lock f, of the ordinary or any desired constructiomwhich may be unlocked by a key, as f and opened, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
A lever 61 is also pivoted in the compartment or recess with its free end in proximity to the lower end of the lever c and has its opposite end linked by a link cl with the hinged portion f, so that when said hinged portion is opened the lever (1 will contact with the lever c and move the latter out of locking engagement with bolt h and against the tension of spring 6, and when so disengaged the cover 9 will be raised at once by the spring 't'.
In use the box is left open until the baker comes, who inserts his goods and pressesdown upon the cover, which simultaneously forces the bottom upward and allows the lever c to spring into locking engagement with the bolt h. It will be observed that the box as thus locked cannot be opened except by a person who not only has the proper key, but knows where the keyhole is and understands swinging out the sectional bottom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In combination, the box having a hinged cover and a hinged bottom section, a springpressed lever mounted in said box and having a hooked end adapted to engage with said cover, a'second lever adapted to move said locking-lever to disengage the same, a link connecting the bottom section and said second lever and locking means for said bottom section, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
