UNiTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND C. SCHMIDT, OF NEVARK, NE'W JEFSEY.
LOCK FOR THE FRAMES OF SATCHELS, &C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,017, lifted August 25, 1885.
Application tiled May 14, 1F85. (No model.)
T 0 all whom il may concern:
Beit known that LFERDTNAND C. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks for the Frames of Satchels, Traveling-Bags, &c., of which the following is a speciijcation.
This invention has for its object to provide novel means for locking the jaws of a satchelframe, travelinglbag, or similar article; and to such end theinvention consists in the eom bination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reierence being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l. represents a front view of a bagframe embodying devices constituting my invention, the same being closed. Fig. 2 is-a transverse section in the plane xx, Fig. l, showing the frame closed in dotted lines and open in full lines. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section in the plane y y, Fig. 6, on a larger scale than the previous figures. Fig. .L. is a transverse section in the plane z, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical sect-ion in the plane x x', Fig. 6. Fig. G is a horizontal section in the plane 1/ y', Fig. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal vertical section of a modification.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings the letter A designates the outer jaw, and B the innerjaw, of abag-frame. On theouter jaw is rmly secured the case (l, which contains the locking mechanism. This mechanism consists ot' two hook-bolts, D l), which swing ou pins c a, which have their bearings in the case (I. A spring, Z, has a tendency to retain thesehoolvbolts in the position shown in Fig. 3. In the top of the case (l is fitted a button, D, provided with arms (l d, which bear upon the tails of the hook-bolts, so that by depressing said button the hookbolts are thrown into their unlocking position shown in Fig. 3 in dotted lines, the position shown in full lines being thelocking position. The heads o( the hook-bolts extend through slots e e in the outer jaw, A, and when the inner jaw is closed said heads engage with slotsff in the inner jaw. The button D can be locked by means of a key, K, which acts upon a slide, g, and throws the same beneath the arms cl d of the button, so that the same cannot be depressed and the heads of the hookbolts cannot be raised out of the slots f f in the innerjaw.
In order to prevent an unauthorized person from opening the bag by inserting a suitable toolbetween the jaws A B and forcing them apart, so that the inner jaw will clear the heads of t-he hoolcbolts, I have secured to the outer jaw two brackets, L 71 which catch beneath the inner jaw when the same is locked. (See Figs. l, 2, and et.) Instead of using the brackets as supports for the inner jaw, I can form lips h0 on the inner edges of the slotsff in the inner jaw, (see Fig. 7,) and in this case the heads of thehook-bolts are provided with recesses hwhich engage with the lips, there by preventing the two jaws from being forced apart.
It must also be remarked that in place of the button a finger-piece of any other form may be used-such as a lever or cam-without departing from the spirit of my invention.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the two jaws A B, of a case secured to the outer jaw, A, two hookbolts mounted in the case, a tingerpiece actv ing on the tails ol' the hoolvbolts, slots in the inner and in the outer jaw, and supports for the inner jaw when the same is closed, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence ot' two sub. scribing witnesses.
FERDINAND (l. SCHMIDT. [n s] W. HAUFF, lVi LLL-xn Mmmm.
