LOCKING-HOOK FOR HATS,- COATS, AND UMBRELLAS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 29, 1913.
Application filed April 15, 1913. Serial No. 761,233.
To all whom it may concern Be it known-that I, NICHOLAS Gnrro, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Locking-Hooks for Hats, Coats, and Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for itsobject to provide a simple, easily attached, easily operated and relatively inexpensive locking hook adapted for use in hotels, school houses, barber shops, etc., to securely retain a coat, hat and umbrella, either or all of them.
With this and other objects in view I have devised the novel structure which I will now describe referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and using reference characters to indicate the several parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective of my novel looking hook illustrating its mode of use, a hatand coat being indicated by dotted lines; Fig. 2 a side elevation of my novel hook in the locked position; Fig. 3 a front elevation in the open position and illustrating the mode of securing an umbrella which is indicated by dotted lines; Fig. l a view as seen from the section line 44 in Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 5 is a view corresponding with Fig. 2 showing it sllight change in the arrangement of the 10 denotes the attaching plate which has cast integral therewith or rigidly secured thereto a hub 11, a horizontally disposed umbrella holding arm 12 and a downwardly and then upwardly and outwardly extending coat and hat holding arm indicated by 13.
1 1 denotes the locking piece which comprises an upwardly and then downwardly extending arm 15, the free end of which is adapted to register in the locking position with the outer end of coat and hat holding arm 13, an outwardly and downwardly extending arm 16, th upper end of which is adapted to engage the outer end of umbrella arm 12 to close a socket, indicated by 17 for an umbrella handle, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and the lower end of which carries a lock 18, and a shank 19 which passes through a hole in the hub and is headed down on the underside as at 20, thereby securely retaining the locking piece in place but permitting it to swing freely when unlocked. Any ordinary style of lock having a bolt retracted by the operation of a key may be used, it being immateriaL'so far as the present invention is concerned, whether the bolt is thrown by a spring or by the key. In Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I have illustrated a form in which the bolt, indicated by 21, shoots downward to engage a socket in coat and hat holding arm 13, and in Fig. 5 a form in which the lock is so placed on arm 16 as to cause the bolt to shoot horizontally to engage a socket in coat and hat holding arm 13.
The operation will be readily understood from the drawing. The locking piece is unlocked and swung to the open position. The hanging loop of a coat may be then passed over arm 13 and down to the lower portion of the arm as indicated in Fig. 1. The shank of an umbrella handle may be placed in socket 17, as indicated in Fig. 3, and a hat hung upon the outer end of arm 13 as indi cated in Fig. 1. The locking piece is then swung to the locking position, locked, and the key removed, leaving coat, hat and umbrella either or all of them perfectly secure. The lower end of arm 16 engages arm 13 closely in the locking position so that in the form illustrated in Fig. 5 the loop of the coat cannot be swung past arm 16 and removed from arm 13 even if there is no hat upon the arm. In the form illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the bolt of the lock will additionally retain the coat against removal. The outer ends of arms 13 and 15 are round ed and a slight space is left between the ends of said arms, in the locking position, to permit the body of a hat to lie between them as clearly shown in Fig. 1, arm 15 in swinging to the locking position passing close to the outer side of the hat body but without danger of marring it. It will be noted furthermore that in the locking position the umbrella socket is closed by the upper portion of arm 16, which is shown as an angle arm,
so that an umbrella as well as a hat and coat may be securely locked in place.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
A device of the character described comprising an attaching plate, a hat and coat holding arm extending downward from the center of the under side thereof and then curved upward ending in line with the top of the plate, an umbrella holding arm eX tending at right angles from one side of the top of the plate having the end thereof extending inward ending in line with the center of the plate, a socket at the center of the plate a locking piece pivoted therein hav-' ing an upper arm curved to meet the end of the coat and hat holding arm to secure a hat therebetween and a horizontal arm extending to meet the umbrella arm to secure an umbrella therebetween and then continued 10 vertically to the hat and coat holding arm,
NICHOLAS GAITO.
