Be it known that we, RoDERicK ROSE and PHILIP BRADY, citizens of the United States, residing at Yonkers and North Tarrytown, respectively, in the county of l/Vestchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat and Coat Racks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hat and coat racks and embodies in its organization a base piece carrying hat and coat receiving members, together with a movable guard member adapted to holding the garments on the rack, and means for locking the guard in retaining position.

The invention has for its objects to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character, wherein the guard serves for effectually holding the garments on the rack, one in which the guard will be automatically locked in retaining position, and one wherein the guard will, when unlocked, spring automatically to releasing position for permitting ready removal of the garments.

With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rack embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the toothed end of the locking bar.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a base member or plate preferably of elongated form, as shown, and having between its ends an extended portion or enlargement 2, within the area of which there is fixed to the base a hat receiving member or hook 3, there being disposed at the lower end of the base 1. and for their active engaging ends to project below the same, a pair of cooperating relatively movable garment gripping members or jaws 4, 5, of which the former is fixed to the base and the latter is pivoted as at 6 to the member 4 and provided with an upwardly extending, outwardly curved bearing arm or shank 7 adapted to be acted upon for moving the member 5 to clamping position, while countersunk into the base at a point above and suitably remote from its lower end is a lock 8 containing a suitable locking mechanism and having a rotary key receiving barrel 9 and a hasp receiving openlng 10.

Arranged to overlie the base plate 1 is a' retaining member or guard 11 preferably of substantially elliptical form, as shown, and composed of wire bent into shape to form integrally with the upper end of the guard, which is provided at its lower end with an outwardly and downwardly curved bearing portion or arm 12, two pairs of spring coils 13 terminating in and joined by a substan tially U-shaped portion or head 14, the side and end bars of which are engaged by fastening members or staples 15 for attaching the guard to the base, while carried by and preferably formed integral with the bearing portion 12 is an inwardly projecting lock engaging bar or hasp 16 provided at its inner end with a series of engaging portions or teeth 17 adapted for engagement by the locking mechanism withln the casing 8, at a point opposite to which there is fixed on the base an umbrella receiving loop or bail 18. In practice, the guard member 11 and movable garment engaging clamp 5 normally stand in the positions indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in use a hat is placed upon the hook 3 and the coat or other garment arranged between the lower active ortions of the clam ing members, after which the lower end 0' the guard member is swung inward toward the base against the action of the springs 13 until the hasp 16 enters opening 10 and is engaged by the locking mechanism within the casing 8. When the guard moves inward the crown of the hat is disposed between the oppositely curved arms thereof, thus to be retained on the hook 3 while the bearing portion 12 acts upon the bearing portion 7 of the movable clamping member for carrying the latter to clamping position and maintaining the clamping members in cooperative clamping engagement with. the garment until the guard is again released by operating the key barrel 9 with a suitable key. When the barrel is moved for unlocking the device, the guard 11 will swing automatically under the action of springs 13, thus to release the garment held by the clamps 4L and 5 and permit ready removal of the hat from the hook 3.

In suspending an umbrella from the device, the handle of the umbrella is passed through the loop 18 and held against removal therefrom by means of the locking bar or hasp 16 which engages in rear of the handle, as will be readily understood.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:

1. In a device of the class described, a base, a hat receiving member carried there by, a movable guard member adapted to overlie the hat for retaining the same on the member, a pair of relatively movable garment engaging devices attached to the base,

' means on the guard member for holding the garment engaging members in engaging position, and means for locking the guard against movement.

2. In a device of the class described, a base, a hat supporting member fixed on the base, a movable guard member adapted for retaining the hat in position on the supporting member, said guard member being provided with a bearing portion, a pair ofcooperating relatively movable clamping members carried by the base and adapted for engagement with a garment, one of said members having a bearing portion adapted to be acted upon by the bearing portion of the guard member to hold the clamps in engaging position, and means for locking the guard member against movement.

3. In a device of the class described, a base, a hat receiving hook fixed on the base, a movable guard member carried by the base and adapted to maintain the hat in position on the hook, said guard member being provided with a projecting bearing portion, a pair of relatively movable garment clamping members attached to the base, one of said members being provided with a projecting bearing portion adapted to be acted upon by the bearing portion of the guard member to move the members to clamping position, and means for locking the guard against movement in retaining position.
