To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD R. J ones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Steubenville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Article and Bag Securers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relatesto article and bag securers and more particularly to that class wherein the articles are secured by the same means by which the bag is secured, these means being fastened to some stationary object. It is well known that devices which accomplish this object already exist, but they work on a different principle and have more parts than mine and none of them have the facility for holding as many articles as my device.

The chief objects of my invention are to produce a neat strong, and durable pocket size article holder or securer, to provide strong arms for securing the device to some stationary object, to prevent the arms of the device being twisted apart, to increase the capacity of the article gripping part and other objects hereinafter set forth, all of said objects being attained by the construction and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 represents a view in side elevation of a device embodying my invention as applied to an umbrella, coat and bag or suit case, the former being life size and the two latter being greatly reduced, and Fig. 2 represents a view in side elevation of the same opened.

1 and 2 designate two arms out out at 3 and pivoted together at 4 and forming in closed position a circle below the pivot and an approximate rectangle above the pivot slightly longer than the diameter of the circle. Said arms are each provided with pins 5, held by braces 6, and having clamping members or semi-circular metal pieces 7 and 8 mounted on their ends, said pieces being provided with lugs 9 and corresponding-recesses 10 respectively, in their ends, said lugs 9 fitting into recesses 10 when the device is locked, thus forming a tight collar (see Fi 1), which is adapted to securely' hold grip or clamp an umbrella or cane.

The clamping members or semi-circular pieces 7 and S hcreinbefore referred to are mounted on pins 5 at an angle to the arms, permitting the insertion of an umbrella or cane in such position that the handle will extend to one side of the arms upward and the cloth part or umbrella proper will extend to the other side and down 'ard. Of course the lugs 9 and recesses 10 prevent one of these pieces being turned independently of the other when the device is locked, thus if any person tried to remove the umbrella without unlocking the device they might use enough force to twist the position of the collar, yet such effort would be of no avail as both pieces of the collar would have to turn together.

The operation is as follows: Taking the device in its opened position, first slip the coat loop over the hook 16, next pass the handle of bag or suit case over the lower end of toggle arm 2, next place the small part or rod of the umbrella in position to be gripped by the clamping members or pieces 7 and 8 forming a collar when the device is closed, then next place a part of the coat in such position as to be engaged between the rubber 11 mounted on the lower end of toggle arm 2 and the lower end of toggle arm 1, then pass the upper ends of said toggle arms over some stationary object (see dotted ring or staple in Fig. 1) then press the arms together when the finger will enter lock Iii. and be engaged by the bolt thereof, locking said arms in such closed position and thereby looking or securing said umbrella, coat and suit-case in the lower part and anchoring these devices by means of the upper ends being looked around or over the ring or hook above-mentioned.

Well knowing that many variations may be made in articles of this nature, I do not wish to protect myself only as to the device shown in the drawings, but on it or any construction involving my general idea.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In article securers, two arms pivoted between their ends on each other, clamping members mounted on the lower part of said arms and means mounted on the upper part of said arms for locking the upper and lower ends of said arms and said clamping mem here together.

2. In article securers, two arms pivoted between their ends on each other, clamping members mounted on the lower part of said arms and extending inwardly from the same and engaging each other, and a lock for locking the upper and lower ends of said arms, and said clamping members together.

3. In article securers, two arms pivoted on each other, clamping members mounted on and extending inward from said arms and forming in closed position a collar in a slanting position in relation to the Vertical position of said arms, and means for locking said arms and said clamping members together.

4. In combination, in article securers, two arms pivoted to each other, pins mounted on said arms, semi-circular pieces mounted on said pins, one of said pieces being provided with lugs on each of its ends, the other piece being provided with corresponding recesses,

a coat-hook mounted on one of said arms, and means for locking said arms in closed position substantially as set forth.

5. In combination, in article securers, two arms pivoted to each other, pins mounted on said arms, clamping members mounted on said pins and adapted to engage each other and means for locking said arms in closed position.
