WILLIAM HENRY JAY, OF LE BEAU, SOUTH DAKOTA.
COMBINATION COAT, HAT, PACKAGE, AND SATCHEL CABINET.
oosen.
To all whom a may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM HENRY J AY,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Le Beau, in the county of WValworth and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Combination Coat, Hat, Package, and Satchel Cabinet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention is an improvement in cabinets, particularly for retaining clothing, satchels, packages, etc, and is designed for hotels and other public places.
The object of the invention is to provide a cabinet having a locker, and also having a garment hanger and a satchel fastener arranged at the outside of the locker, and in which access to the locker, removal of the garment from the support, and the detachment of the fastener are controlled by a single lock on the door of the cabinet.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clamp for securing the garment to the hanger, operated from the door of the locker.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing an embodiment of my improved cabinet as when in use; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical section of the same substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the cabinet taken through the locker, with the bottom of the locker broken away to show the connection between the garment clamp and the locker door; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the cabinet, showing the connections of the satchel fastener; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view through the upper portion of the cabinet, taken at right-angles to the section shown in Fig. 2.
A locker 6, which is designed to be secured against the wall of a room in an elevated position, is provided with a door 7, ordinarily hinged to swing to one side, and having a lock 8 for securing it in closed position, the locker also having suitable shelves, if such are desired. Suitably supported underneath the locker is a garment hanger 9, shown to have the oppositely-extending supporting arms and provided with a depending clamping jaw 10, the clamping jaw ordi- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 10, 1910.
Patented Nov. "2, 1911.

narily curving about the front of the hanger, and at a point therebelow provided with a substantial flat clamping face. An opposed jaw 10 is hinged to the jaw 10 and is adapted to swing toward and away from said jaw 10. Pivotally attached to the jaw 10 is a link 11, the opposite end of which is attached to one arm of a lever 13 fulcrumed intermediate its length to the under side of the locker, to the other arm of which lever is connected one end of a link 12, the other end of said link being pivoted to the end of a door at a point removed from the hinged edge. By connecting the clamp with the door, as described, when the door is opened, the jaw 1O will be retracted from the jaw 10, leaving a suflicient opening therebetween for the passage of the garment in placing it on or removing it from the hanger. When the door is closed, the jaws will be brought to bear against the garment or garments on the hanger and prevent their removal.
A satchel fastener, ordinarily in the nature of a chain 1%, has one end permanently secured within the locker, and the other end removably engaged on a hook 15, as best shown in Fig. 1, that portion of the chain which is engaged by the hook, passing out of the locker through a notch 16 formed in the front adjacent to the free edge of the door, the notch inclining downwardly and outwardly so that the chain when passed thereinto will tend to slide away from the door and thus not interfere with the closing and opening of the latter. The permanently-attached end of the chain I have shown to pass through a suitable opening formed in the bottom of the locker. The satchel or similar baggage is seated on the floor of the room in which the cabinet is placed and is secured by passing the chain through the handle, after which the detachable end of the chain is rengaged on the hook 15.
The garments are applied to the hanger in the customary manner, and the hat, packages and such other clothing which it is desired to lock up, are placed within the locker 6. On closing the door of the locker the garments on the hanger are clamped, and after the door is locked, not only these and the articles within the locker secured against removal, but also the satchel. Thus, with one look the satchel, garments andthe articles within the locker are separately secured.
if desired the combination to the lock can be posted on the inside of the locker to inform the user or if desired a check having the combination can be furnished to the guest or other party by the clerk.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A locker having a door honged thereto to swing from one side thereof, a garment hanger supported on said locker beneath the same, said hanger comprising oppositelyextending supporting arms, a pair of clamping jaws pivoted together and curved about said hanger, said jaws having opposed flat clamping faces, a lever pivoted to the under side of said locker, a link connecting said isver with one of said jaws, a second link connecting said lever with said door at the point removed from the hinged edge, and a single lock fastening said door and jaws in closed position, thereby preventing access to said locker and clamping the articles on said supporting arms in position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY JAY.
