To (LU who/1t it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN L. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Newport News, in the county of Warwick and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower end of an open door showing my device applied thereto in a locked position; Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section of the device showing the locking legs dotted in position for engagement with the floor, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of details hereinafter described.
This invention has relation to that type of door checking device covered by my former patent dated March 12, 1907, and numbered 847,285, .in which is employed a pair of locking feet pivotally depending from a support carried on the door near its lower end, said feet inclining away from each other and normally tending to swing downward toward each other and into engagement with the floor, foot-operated means being provided. for spreading and lifting the arms away from the floor and other foot-operated means being provided for normally locking the arms or feet to a raised inactive position. The present improvements are designed to simplify the construction and provide means whereby the locking arms or feet will be automatically released by the bumping of thedoor against an obstacle such as the washboard or wall back of the door, thereby automatically throwing down the locking arms to their locking position, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings by letters A designates a hollow supporting bar or casing which is provided at one end with a vertical flange which adapts it to be attached to a door in the manner shown in Fig. 1. A pair of legs or arms C are pivoted upon horizontal transverse pins and these legs depend from the casing in a diverging manner, one inclining toward the door and the other away from the door. On the lower end of each leg is a cup in which a rubber or other resilient floor-engaging pad is inserted.
The upper ends of the legs are extended beyond the pivots laterally so as to overlap and these overlapping parts are provided each with a longitudinal slot a. Depending between these overlapping extensions is the lower end of a rod B which extends up through the casing and is normally held up by a spring I), the tendency of this spring being to throw the floor-engaging ends of the arms downward and toward each other. In the side of the pin B nearest the door is a notch I) and engaging in this notch is the in ner edge (Z of an opening (1 in a rod D, said rod working along the under side of the easing and being held in place in any suitable manner as for instance by transverse pins 6. The outer portion of the rod is extended out through'a hole in the end wall of the casing and is provided with a head (Z in which is inset a suitable elastic buffer or bumper f. This rod is normally pressed outwardly to keep its tooth or edge at in engagement with notch 7) by means of a coil spring 9.
It will be observed that by forcing the rod D inward by the foot or by its bumperf coming in contact with the washboard or wall of the room, the rod B will be elevated and the locking feet will be brought down into engagement with the lloor and thus lock the door at that point.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a support adapted for attachment to a door, a pair of locking feet pivotally depending from said support and inclining away from each other and normally tending to swing downward toward each other into engagement with the lloor, foot-operated means between the arms for spreading and raising them against their normal tendency, and means for normally locking the arms in their raised position, the operative element of this latter means extending laterally outward through the end wall of the casing, for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a support adapted for attachment to a door, a floor engaging means depending therefrom and means whereby said floor-engaging means tend to normally engage the floor to lock the door, means for locking the floor-engaging means out of action, this latter means embodying a rod extending laterally through the end wall of the casing, for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with a support adapted for attachment to a door, lloor-cngaging means carried thereby, means for norn'ially actuating said means, a locking device for the same, this locking device embodying a rod and means for normally pressing it out wardly, said rod extending beyond the end of the casing so as to be automatically actuated by contact with an obstacle when the door is swung open.
4. In combination with a casing adapted for attachment to a door, a pair of depending locking arms having lateral extensions to ward each other, a foot-operated rod passing down through the casing and having movable engagement with said extensions and provided with a notch, a spring for raising said rod a locking bar extending out through the end wall of the casing and normally en- 15 gaging said notch, means for keeping said locking bar in engagement with the operating rod, substantially as set forth.
