UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JosErn K. MoEEETT, 0E wATEETowN, NEW YORK.
INIPRQVEMENT IN TABLELEAF SUPPORTS.v
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,260, dated Augus't 26, 1873; application led July 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPn K. MOEEETT,
' of Watertown, in the county of Jefferson and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Machine Table, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of referrence marked thereon, making a part of this specification. V
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a brace and joint for supporting the leaf of a sewing-machine or other table, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.`
In order to enable others 'skilled in the art to which my inventio'n appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a section of a part of a table with hinged leaf, showing my brace and joint attached to the same.
A represents a part of a `sewing-machine or other table with a leaf, B, hinged thereto by The brace and joint for supporting the leaf B in a horizontal position is constructed as follows: At that edge of the table A, where the leaf is hinged on the under side, is secured a plate, C, with verticallydownward projecting arm D. To the lower end of this arm is pivoted one end of a jointed brace, lG G, the other end of which is pivoted to an ear, et, projecting downward from a plate, E, which is attached to theunder side of the leaf B. The part G of the brace is the one pivoted to the arm D, and is about twice as long as the part G, whichis pivoted to the ear a. The joint b in the brace G G is constructed to form shoulders b b, which bear against each other when the brace is extended in a straight line. About midway of the part G of the brace is a lug, e, connected by a spiral spring, d, with the leaf B.
It will readily be seen that, when the leaf` is raised and the brace extended, the spring d will hold the brace in proper position, and any weight on the leaf B, instead of breaking the joint, will have a tendency to make it more irm. A slght downward pressure on the joint 'b will break the same and allow the leaf to fall down.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj The combination, with a table, A, and leaf B, of t-he plate C with arm D, jointed brace G G', spring d acting directly on the jointed brace, and plate E with ear a, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of June, 1873. j
JOSEPH K. MOFFETT.
