o. A. WILLIAMS.
DOOR CHECK.
nesses 'and out of the way.
' ATES ATENr FFICE@ CHARLES A. VILLIAMS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO I J. K. TEETZEL, OFYSAME PLACE.
DOOR-CHECK SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,999, dated October 2'5, 1887.k
Application tiled January 3, 1887. Serial No. 223,265. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, GHARLEs A. WILLIAMs, ofThirty-sixth ward, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locking Devices for Doors, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specifi cation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to a device for locking or bracing doors when open or partly open, and the same device can be used as a bumper, all of which will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows my door-locking device when in position or attached to a door, the dotted lines in horizontal position showing the device in position to be used as a bumper. The vertical dotted lines show the same when thrown up Fig. 2 is asectional view.
A represents a section of a door.
B is the base of my device, and has holes a c' for screws. To this base B are thelugs d d, through which is a bolt-hole, b5, attached.
C is a bar which is secured to the lugs d d by a bolt through the opening in d. This bar terminates in a rod, c, and has a threaded end to fit in the nut b2, inside the movable tip b. By this means the tip b is held in the sleeve B' and against the spring c c'.
b is a rubber cushion secured to the tip b.
Instead of using a bolt at d', I may secure the bar C to the lugs cl by putting trun nions b on the bar C, and then have slots b4 in the lugs d, either partly or entirely through the same. The sleeve B is hollow part way into the same to admit the spring c/ and tip b. The balance of the sleeve B has a hole of a size barely sufiicicnt to admit the bar C.
The
spring c' rests against the bore of the sleeve B and against the tip b, and by this means the sleeve can be drawn out sufficiently to put the locking devioein the several positions aforesaid by having the inne-r end of said sleeve engage the lugs.
When my locking device is intended to brace a door open, for instance, the tip is placed against the floor, as seen in Fig. l, slightlyinclined from the door. The tip being on a spring, is made adjustable on floors that are uneven. y
When not otherwise used, my device can readily be madeinto a bumper, as seen in Fig. 1 in the horizontal dotted lines, before referred toa Vhen the bar C is secured by trunnions, as aforesaid, there Will be a square opening made in the base B, (marked B2 in Fig. 2,) and then the bar will be passed up through such opening and the trunnions bi will go into the slots b4 and may revolve therein, the same as ou a bolt.
Having thus described my invention,\vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
As an improved article of manufacture, a door-check consisting of a bracket havinglugjournals, a bar pivoted therein, a movable clip on the outer end of the said bar, a movable sleeve, and a spring having one end bearing against the sleeve and the opposite end bearing against the clip, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. VILLIAMS.
Wil nesses:
JOHN H. Cim'r'rv, NELSON I. REED.
