Description

PATENTED APR. 30, 1907.
F. WHEELER.
TOY.
APPLICATION FILED 00T. 24, 1906.
FRED WHEELER, OF SODUS, NEW YORK.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
vvlication filed October 24,1906. Serial No. 340,369.
To all whom, t may concern:y
Be it known that I, FRED WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sodus, in the county of lVayne and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Toy, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to an improvement in toys, and has for its object to provide a device of this character, which is highly amusing, easy of manipulation and cheap to manufacture.
In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device, showing one pair of eyes in position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device, showing a different pair of eyes in position. Fig. 3 is a face view of a plurality of different pairs of eyes, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the device taken on the line 4 4.- of Fig. 2.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the igures of the drawings.
The invention comprises a casing preferably constructed of sheet metal, having a body-portion 2, and a removable top 3, on which is located the representation of a head 4, preferably a human one having a humorous expression, although a representation of an animals head can be used Without departing from the s irit of the invention. This head can be em ossed or printed on the casing, or printed on a label and the saine pasted thereon` Y View portions or openings 5 are formed in the cover at the points corresponding to the eyes of the head. Located in the interior of said casing is a roller-supporting bracket 6. This bracket consists of a base 7 rigidly secured to the bottom of the casing by solder or other suitable means, and
having spaced ears 8, in which is journaled a shaft 9 carrying a roller 10 that is located between the ears. The inner end of the shaft 9 is provided with a head 11 adapted to prevent the longitudinal movement in one direction of the shaft, and the consequent derangement of the roller 11. This shaft extends outwardly through alined openings or recesses 12, located in the overlapping edges of the top and body portions of the casing, and is provided on its exposedend with a knob 13 adapted to be used in turning the roller in either direction. The top portion of the casing is prevented from rotating by the bearing 9, which extends through the corresponding recesses or openings 12.
The representation of a plurality of pairs of eyes 5fL of various colors and characteristics is printed upon a strip of paper or other material, (as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing) and the same is permanently secured to the surface of the roller by glue or other adhesive means. It will therefore be seen that each pair of eyes 5*L on the roller 10 can be brought into register with the openings or view portions 5 of the head 4, by turning the roller 11 in either direction, by means ot the knob 13.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iszl 1. In a toy, a casing having the representation of a head thereon and having openings corresponding to the eyes of such representation, and a single carrier rotatably mounted within the casing and provided with the representation of a plurality of eyes that are movable into and out of register with said openings.
2. In a toy, the combination with a casing having a removable top on whichis located thc representation of a head having view poi'- tions corresponding to the eyes of such rep` resentation, of a bracket rigidly secured in the casing and having spaced ears, a shaft journaled in the ears and. carrying a roller provided with the representation of a plurality of pairs of eyes of different characteristics, and a knob mounted on the exposed end of said shaft for rotating the shaft and roller and moving the different pairs of eyes located on the'roller into and out of register with the view portions.
3. In a toy, the combination with a casing having a removable top on which is located the representation of a head having view portions corresponding to the eyes of such representation, of a shaft journaied in the casing, said shaft passing through the casing and cover and holding them against relative rotation, and the represent-ation of a plurality of sets of eyes that are rotatable with the shaft and are movable into and -out of register with the view portions.
In testimony, that I claimthe foregoing as my own, I-have hereto ailixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRED WHEELER.
