Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. ML, 1913.
Application filed March 7, 1913. Serial No. 752,621.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. \VALLs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount \Vashington, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Pencil, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has special reference to new and useful improvements in pencils, and more particularly to pencils for writing ornamental signs and the like.
The essential object of the invention resides in the provision of a pencil core so formed that in writing a succession of signs a ribbon-like appearance will be given, which will show a progressive development of striated form, whereby an erasure or 111- terpolation may be readily detected.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pencil constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view illustrating the use and application of the improved pencil; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the pencil; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of a fragmentary portion of a pencil with a modified core.
In illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention, my improved pencil is indicated by the numeral 10 and is shown as being preferably formed of two sections 11 secured together, whereby the cross section of the pencil is substantially oval, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. I wish to have it understood, however, that the cross section of the pencil may vary as shall be found desirable. The co-engaged faces of the sections 11 are provided with registering recesses 12 receiving the improved core 13. This core is of flattened cross section and sufiiciently heterogeneous or non-homogeneous in any cross section as regards its marking properties, so as to produce a mark which, .upon close examination, shall appear as a wide streak or ribbon of gradually changing or developing complex striated or banded appearance. This application of the improved pencil is indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, wherein a writing sheet 14 is illustrated as marked thereby. The core is shown as embodying a plurality of granules 14: or striac 15 which may be of various colors, as shown. The core may be composed of the same substance in grauules or striae of different marking proper ties, or of different substances in granules or striac of different marking properties, or with mixed abrasive granules incorporated, or of combinations of the above; and by difference of marking properties is included differences in stain, smudge, perinanency, abrasion of surface marked, or reactance of chemicals, as indicated by the sev eral granules or strive composing the core. It will thus appear that the pencil core formed as above described will readily serve to distinguish or identify a mark by its striae, and any erasure or interpolation may be detected by observing the abrupt change in the progressive development of the ribbon st-riw.
Having thus described my invention,
'what I claim is 1. A pencil having a core which is nonhomogeneous in cross section taken at different points.
2. A pencil core of flattened cross section and heterogeneous as regards its marking properties at difierent cross sectional points.
3. A pencil having a core which is nonhomogeneou in any cross section, said core being composed of striac of different marking properties, whereby any erasure may be detected from the abrupt change in the progressive development of the. mark produced thereby.
In testimony whereof .l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHI\- A. WALLS.
