SOAP CAKE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,939, dated October 14, 1902.

Be it known that I, WASHINGTON BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soap Cakes,of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in cakes of soap formed so as to contain advertising or other mattei', which will be displayed as the cake of soap is consumed by use.

rilhe particular object of my invention is to provide such a cake of soap which shall be composed entirely of soap, instead of inserting a foreign body for the purpose of carrying and displaying the advertising or similar matter.

Another object of my invention is to provide such a cake of soap in which as the cake is consumed the words, characters, or ornamentation displayed may be changed.

Another object of my invention is to provide such a cake of soap in which the ad vertising or like matter may be displayed in letters or characters contrasting in color or effect with the main body of the cake of soap forming the background for such letters or characters.

These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows a soap core or insert having printed thereon or stamped therein any desired characters-such, for instance, as the letters P D. Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the second stage in the formation of a cake of soap containing the preferred embodiment of my invention. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through a completed cake of soap, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line et et of Fig. 3 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

Like letters of reference indicate the same parts in the several figures of the drawings.

Referring by letter to the accompanying' drawings, A is a core or insert made of soap and having printed, impressed, or otherwise shown thereon any desired chaiacters,iigures, or ornamentation-such, for instance, as the letters P D. In the preferred embodiment of my invention I make this core of opaque soap and cast about it a layer B of transparent soap, upon either or both surfaces of which are formed in relief any desired characters or ornamentation, such as the letters C. I then surround the layer B and the letters C with a layer of opaque soap D, thereby forming my complete cake of soap.

Vhen my invention is embodied in the for mation of a cake of soap, as above indicated, the finished cake presents the same appearance as the cake of soap formed in the ordinary manner and may have on its surface any desired characters imprinted in the usual manner. As the cake of soap is used, however, the outer layer of opaque soap willgradually be washed away until it uncovers the upper surface of the relief letters C, which will then be disclosed in letters of transparent soap surrounded by a background of opaque soap. As the use of the soap is continued the layer D and the relief letters C will be gradually washed away until the surface of the layer B is uncovered. When this point is reached, the relief letters C, as well as the portion of the layer D covering the outer surface of the layer B, will have been washed away, leaving a cake of transparent soap B surrounding the core A. The layer B being transparent will of course display any characters imprinted upon or carried by the core A until the layer Bis entirely washed away. y

If desired, the core A may be made only of sufficient thickness to carry the matter to be displayed thereon, in which event the display matter may be shown until the entire cake of soap is consumed, or the core A may be made of any suitable substance other than vsoap for carrying the display matter.

While I have in the drawings shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that it may be embodied in various other ways without departing from the spirit of my invention. The cake of soap may be made, if desired, with only two layers,vor the number of layers may be multiplied indefi nitely. Each layer may be made of transparent soap with the display matter shown thereon in contrasting colors, or the different layers may be made of opaque soap with the relief letters C formed of a soap contrasting in color with the layer of soap surrounding said letters; but all such Variations are con templated by my invention and do not con' stitute a departure from the spirit thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A cake of soap comprising an opaque soap core carrying relief characters, and entirely surrounded by an outer layer of transparent soap carrying relief characters, substantially as described.

2. A cake of soapcomprising a core carrying relief characters of soap, said core and said relief characters being entirely surrounded by a layer of soap contrasting With said characters, and another layer of soap entirely surrounding the first-mentioned layer, substantially as described.

3. A cake of soap comprising a core of opaque soap, said core entirely surrounded by a layer of transparent soap carrying relief characters, and another layer of soap formed around the rst layer and said relief characters and contrasting therewith.

4.-. A cake of soap comprising a core bearing display matter, said core entirely surrounded by a layer of transparent soap formed with raised characters, and an outer layer of soap entirely surrounding and covering said inner layer and said raised characters, and contrasting with the color of the inner layer.

5. A cake of soap formed of a series of alternating transparent and opaque layers of soap, each succeeding layer entirely surrounding the preceding layer, and formed with display matter, substantially as described.

6. A cake of soap comprising a core of opaque soap bearing display matter, a layer of transparent soap entirely surrounding said core and display matter, and formed on its surface with display matter, and an outer layer of opaque soap entirely surrounding and covering the said inner layer and display matter.
