COMPUTING DEVICE."
APPLIGATIQN FILED Ju. 1o, 190e.
W/TNESSES':
lUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK P. GLASNER AND JOHNSON J. GLASIER, OF SPRING-FIELD, SOUTH DAKOTA.
COMPUTING DEVICE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented .Tully 2, 190'?. I
Application filed January 10,1906.' Serial No. 295.378.
7'0 all whom. il may concern:
.Be it known that we, FRANK P. GLASN nu and .Ton-N- soN J. (immun, both citizens of the Unit-ed States, and residents oi Springlield, in the County oi Bonhomme and State of South Dakota, have invented a neiv and Improved Computing Device., of which the following is a lull, clear, and exact desicription.
This invention relates to improvements,in compuling or adding and l ubtracting devices combined with a measuring ruler, the obj ect being io provide a deviceol' thisv charactervthat may be produced al. it small price because ol` its simple construction, and that will be found very iiseiiil as an article ol` desk furniture.
l will dese'ribe a computing device embodying my in vent-ion and then point out the novel leal iires in the appended claims.
Reference is to be hud lo the accom panying dra-wings forming a, part oi thinl spec'iiicalion, inwhieh similar characters of relerenee indicate corresponding parte in all the ligures.
Figure l is a top view with portions broken away. oi a. (.'omputing device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2*-2 ol' Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a `Qection on -the line SW3 ol' Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a plan ol a portion ol' the device. l
The device comprises a easing consisting ol a baseplatc. 5 which may be oi any suitable material, such, ior inst-ance,- as metal, Wood, Celluloid or other substance, and secured thereto is a iraine one edge oi which is beveled as indicated at 7 and on this beveled portion are :i 'ale marks ii indl ating int-lies and iractions of inches. The under side of the casing ne-.tr the bev eled edge has a longitudinal rib 9 which will slightly raise the edge ol the ruler from paper or the like, thus preventing the smearing ofl ink on the paper when the device is used for ruling purposes. The top of the casing or frame is provided with n sliding cover i() having openings .ll through which the numeral disks ure disclosed. i
` Around eaeh opening at one side of the leliding (rover iire'nmnerale 'l2 and on the opposite eide are numerals lli, the numerals un the opposite sides being arranged in reverse order so that the sliding Cover when in ono vposition may indicate the proper movement of the nnmeral disk lor addition and when in the reverse position will indicato the movement [or subtraction.
Arranged in the casing is a plurality of nuint'ral disks lil. cach having on its upper surface numerals extending l'roin naught-fito nine, the Iii-st disk indicating units, the nexttens, and so on up to tens 'of thousands. The units-disk is providcdvwith enough peripheral teeth to eng-.ige with the pinion and inove it enough to move the wheel oi the next higher denomina-tion one-tenth ol' its circumference, and thepther disks are also provided with pi'n'ipheral teeth', and arranged between mij-.went disks are piniens 16 with which tho teeth are designed to engage for imparting'motion from one disk to another; that is, when the units disk shall have made one complet rotation its teeth 15 by engaging with the.'
pinion 'lli will rotate the same, causing a. one-step movement oi' the tens-disk.
Arranged over each disk is zi. fixed stop-plate 17 having an opening 18 through which the number on the disk is shown. `At opposite sides of each number on disk are periorations 19, Z0 in which the. point of a pencil or otherdeviee may be inserted for roi-ating the disk. rlhat is, in subtracting, the. pcncil or other device is t0 be inserted in one of the periorations for turning the disk lo the left, or in the other perforation for turning lhe disk to the right, the disk being turned until he pencil ortho like, comes in contaet'with the `stopphite 17.
Having thus described my 'invention l elai'rn as. new, and desire to secure by Letters Patenti#- i. computing device einnpi'ising a casing, a removable eorer therefor. iuivinr.' -openings, numerals around snid openings :it opposite sides, the nuinerals'of one side being in reverse order to the numerals of the opposite side, and
computing disks arranged in thi` cnsing below said openings.
2. A computing,` device comprising n casing, a removable cover for lbe casing having openings, niirnerill iii-omni said openings :il: opposite sides, the numerals nt one side being in reverse order to the nuinei'iihi :it tli'e opposite side, find disks arranged in the cnslng rind bnving nnint-rails. and also having pel'ioi'niions nt eiich Side of theY numerals, and a stop-plaire over each disk, tbe sold stopplate bzivlngz :in opening. Y
ln testimony whereof we have signed our nnmcs to this sperilicnllon in the present-o of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK I. GLASNER. JOHNSON .T. GLASIER.
