Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6,1913.
Application filed August 1, 1912. Serial No. 712,687.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS Moss, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in Toys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
his invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used for the purposes of amusement and instruction.
A 'My invention has for its object primarilyto provide a form of toy designed to be em' ployed preferably for amusing and instructand wherein is provided a box, or casing adapted to be closed or opened by a lid hinged thereto. Rotatably held within the box is a circular disk upon the peripheral edge of of teeth, and the exposed surface of said disk is divided into sections in which is displayed the letters of the alphabet, numerals, animals, or like subjects which will serve to interest as well as instruct a child. By the means of a yielding catch mounted upon a spring controlled operating lever which is moved through the medium of a gripping member, or finger when the lid is swung to a closed position on the box the disk is partially rotated and the figures thereon will be consecutively displayed through an opening in a fixed covering provided in the box above said disk.
A further object of the invention is to provide a toy which may be made in plain, or fanciful designs, and which is susceptible of being made in various shapes and sizes.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafte'r and then pointed out in'the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a top plan of one form of toy embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section taken on'the line 11-11 of Fig. 1.
The toy has a box, or casing 10 which may be square, or any other suitable shape or size. Pivotally held to the top of the box 10 by a hinge 11 or the like is a lid 13 which is adapted to be lowered upon the box, or swung therefrom. lnclosing' the top of said box is' a stationary cover 14 whereby ferred numerals,
which are provided a plurality;
a chamber 15 is provided interiorly thereof, and in proximity to one end of said covering is a peep opening 16.
In the chamber 15 of the box 10 and pivoted by means of a pin 17 held in the bottom of said box, is a circular disk, or flat plate'18. The surface of the disk. 18 which is opposed to the cover 14 may be divided into equal sections by radially disposed lines,
as 19, and in the sections thereby provided are painted, or otherwise indicated thereon, the letters of the alphabet, as 20, or if preor pictures of animals, or other subjects may be shown to afford amusement and instruction especially to a child. Upon the peripheral edge of the disk 18 is an annular row of teeth 21, each of which corresponds to one of the sections between the lines 19, and each of said teeth is of length "transversely which is equal to the width of one of the sections so that when the disk is partially rotated for the distance of one of the teeth the letter, or picture illustrated in the section will be ing 16 of the cover 14, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Serving as a means torotate in succession the disk 18 the distance of the length of one of its teeth, I provide an operating bar, or arm 28, having a groove, or opening 24 lengthwise therein, and through this opening are one or more pins 25 held in the bottom of the box, adjacent to the peep opening 16 of the cover 14. Fastened to one end of the bar 23 and also fastened to the inner surface of the wall of the box which is opposite to the hinged edge of the lid 13, is a spring 26 which normally serves to force said bar in a direction toward this wall.
Upon the edge of the bar 23 which is opposed to the teeth of the disk 18 is a gripping element, or catch 27, which may be in the form of a strip of spring metalhaving one end secured to the bar and having its free end bent so as to be in engagement with the teeth of the disk. Projecting "up wardly from the opposite end of the bar 23 1s a lug 28, and said lug is in the path of movement of a finger 29 the hinged edge of' the lid 13.
The finger 29 is disposed in the same plane 'as the underneath surface of the lid 13 so the finger will engage the lug 28 when which extends from I the lid is closed upon the box, and the bar 23 will be moved against the tension of the chamber and having a plurality of spaced spring 26. The catch 27 will then engage one of the teeth of the disk 18 which will be partially rotated upon its pivot for registering one of the characters thereon with the peep opening 16 of the cover 14 so as to be seen by the person playing with the toy. The lid is' then closed upon the box, and on swinging it open again the next character on the disk will be shown through the peep opening. In this manner all of the characters may be consecutively displayed.
In order to prevent the disk 18 from being rotated for more than the distance of one of its teeth, to the front wall of the box and at the corner thereof which is opposite to the spring 26 is held one end of a yielding stop 30 which is preferably in form of a strip of spring metal having a free end engaging the teeth of the disk, as illustrated.
In the foregoing description I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications'may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I
' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1.
