3 Claims. (01. 84-95) This invention relates to wearing apparel accessories particularly of the novelty type, and in particular a handbag or pocket book with a music box incorporated therein and wherein the parts are arranged so that the music box will play as the handbag is opened.

The purpose of this invention is to provide a novelty handbag particularly adapted for children wherein means is provided for increasing the sales value of handbags of this type.

Music boxes have been incorporated in various devices and instrumentalities of different types have been used for starting and stopping music boxes, however, it has been found difficult to use a conventional music box in a handbag for children with the music box positioned to operate as the handbag is opened. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates an improved method of operating a music box whereby the works of a music box are installed inside of a handbag and hidden below the lining thereof, and in which means is provided for preventing operation thereof until the handbag is opened.

The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a control for a music box whereby with the works of the music box installed in a handbag or the like the music box will start to play as the handbag is opened.

Another object of the invention is to provide a music box control wherein a music box with the control incorporated therein may be installed in a handbag for children without changing the design or elements of the handbag.

A further object of the invention is to provide a handbag having a music box incorporated therein which is of a simple and economical construction.

With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a music box works including a roller with spaced pins thereon, spring fingers for engaging the pins, a spring motor for rotating the roller, a spinner also actuated by the motor, an arm pivotally mounted on the device and positioned to engage the spinner for preventing operation of the music box works, and means for actuating the arm to release the works as a handbag in which the device is installed is opened.

Qther features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view showing a handbag with part of the lining broken away to show the position of a music box therein.

Figure 2 is a cross section on an enlarged scale and with parts broken away illustrating the position of a music box and a control device therefor in a handbag.

Figure 3 is a detail showing a plan view of the music box works with the control arm thereon.

Figure 4 is a detail showing a longitudinal section through one end of a handbag showing the music box works therein.

Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the musical pocket book of this invention includes the works of a music box comprising spring fingers I0 mounted on a base II and positioned to be engaged by pins 12 on the surface of a roller 13, an arm I l pivotally mounted in a bearing l5 and positioned to engage a spinner IE to prevent rotation of the roller l3, and a cord ll attached to the arm 14 and to a panel 3 mounted behind the lining ill of a handbag or pocket book 26.

The spring fingers [0 are secured to the base II with screws 2! and 22 and the bearing I5 is provided with a base or flang 23 which is positioned under the head of the screw 2|. The arm I4 is formed with a U-shaped section 24, the lower part of which extends through the bearing l5, and an extended end 25 of the arm is engaged by a spring 26 which extends around the lower part of the section 24, with one end bearing against the upper surface of the base and the other hooked around the end 25 of the arm. By this means the spring urges the end 25 upwardly and the opposite end of the arm l4 downwardly whereby the point 21 of the arm is in the path of the spinner I6 so that it holds the spinner until the arm is drawn upwardly by the cord ll, the lower end of which is attached to the arm, and the upper end to the panel I8 at the point 2% In this design a gear 29 on the shaft 30 of the roller I3 meshes with a pinion 3| on a shaft 32, and a gear 33 on the shaft 32 meshes with a pinion 34 on a shaft 35. The shaft 35 is provided with a worm gear 36 that meshes with a worm 3! on the vertical shaft 38 of the spinner I6 whereby the spinner is rotated by the spring motor 39 which also rotates the roller IS.

The spring motor 39 is provided with a winding stem 45 that extends through a mounting base 4! and also through a bottom 42 of a handbag or the like, so that it is possible to wind the motor from the exterior of the handbag.

In the design shown the music device is enclosed in a housing having a cover panel 43 with side panels 44 and 45, and the panel l8 extends upwardly from one side of the mounting base 4|, with a similar panel 46 extended upwardly from the opposite side.

The device with the mounting elements, is installed below the lining l9 which extends throughout the interior of the handbag or pocket book, so that the device is completely hidden.

With the music device incorporated in a handbag in this manner the arm I! is released when the handbag is closed whereby the arm engages the spinner l6, as shown in Figures 2 and 4, and upon opening thjhandbag the co'rd I l, draws the arm l4 upwardly so that it releases the spinner and the music elements are free to operate where, by music is produced. Upon closing thehandbag the arm l4 drops downwardly, or'is drawn downwardly by the spring 26, so thatdhagainengages the spinner and the music'stops.
