tain new and useful improvements in a Car' Y Lock, offwhich the 'following-is a speciiication. I Y v- Y The present invention relates to a lock to 1o be used in conjunction with freight carsand the like to indicateand record the number of times the lock has been opened. Y
Another important object of the invention is to provide aV device of this nature which will be simple andV efficient in construction, reliable in operation, comparatively ineX- pensive to manufacture, durable, and well .adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.V
With the above and numerous other object-S in View as will appear as the `description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and V; claimed. s
In the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective of a door frame and door showing my locking mechanism associated therewith,
vFigure 2 is an elevation of a portion of the door frame showing mylocking mechanism therein,
Figure 3 is a Vfragmentary elevation of the end of a freight car door showing myhasp attached thereto,
Y Figure 4 is a transverse vertical section taken through the locking mechanism,
Figure 5 is a section taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Figure 4 looking in the direction of the arrow,
Figure 6 is a detailed elevation of some of the recording` drums, t
Figure 7 is a detailed section taken Substantially on the line 7-7 of Figure 6 looking in the direction of the arrow, and
Figure 8 is a detailed section taken substantially on the line 8 8 of Figure 4 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will bel seen that 1 designates a portion of a door frame and 2 the slidable door which abuts the frame when in a closed position. A stra 3 is fixed to the door 2 adjacent its end and terminates `in an eye 4 which engages the of the lever 14.
eye 5 of the hasp 6 which is provi ded with an oifset hook extension 7. My locking mechanism is enhoused in the oase 8 which is provided with permutation locking means 9 of any preferred construction being operable by the knob 10 so as to mOve the boltll in and out of registry with the opening 12 through which the hook exis ina lockedposition tension Zl is adapted to project when the -husp A rod 13 is mounted in the case S adjacentthe upper end thereof and acts as a fulcrum lower end of which is for the lever 14 the adapted to be engaged by the hooked extension 7 so as to slightly fuicrum the same, this end of the lever being held in engagement with the inwardly extending flange of the opening 12 when the hooked shaped extension 9 is not in engagement therewith 16. A dog 17 is by Vmeans of a spring pivoted on the upper end A recording mechanism of any preferred construction is mounted thecase and is actuated recording mechanism in the present in the upper end of by the dog 17. This stance consists of a shaft 1S spanned across the top portion of the case Vmounted thereon a plurality 8 and having 0f recording lation of the lever 14.
The drums 19 are provided with extensions 21 terminating in knobs 22 rotatable th ereon and also with iin.n
gers23 which are engageable with the knobs 22 of an adjacent drum so that upon rotation of one drum the adjacent drum will be slightly rotated only. These drums are visible through an opening 25 and thus the number of times in the case S in which the hasp extension 7 is inserted in the opening 12 will be recorded.
`It is thought that the operation and construction of the device will now be readily understood without a more detailed description thereof. It is desired, however, to point out that numerous changes in the details of construction tion and arrangement of and in the combina darts may be resorted to without departing` from the spirit of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new is :f
1. In combination, lock in said case incl a case, a permutation uding a bolt, said case provided with en opening adapted to register with the bolt when the sume is iii en extended and looking position, e lever iulorumed in the casing, means for holding 1the lever riormally eo that one eiid 'will register with the opening, e iiiemher adapted to he `projected through seid. opening for elige-gement with J`die lever eo es io actuele the seme and to he engaged by the boli so es to prevent its removed, e dee; pivotelly mounted ou the/other eiid of zhe lever, and zii-*ie cording' mechanism actuated by J@he dog upon rocking el: the lever iii'ihe meneer and for *die purpose Specified.
