Description

UNITED STATES ATENT OEEICE.
WALDEMAR CHRISTENSEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOY WAGON.
SPECIFICATION Aforming part of Letters Patent No. 718,192, dated January 13, 1903.
Application iiled February 25, 1902. Serial No. 95,630. (No model.)
To all whom t 1v1/wy concern.:
Be it known that I, WALDEMAR CHRISTEN- SEN, a citizen of Denmark, and a resident of New York city, Bronx, county and State of NewYork, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Toy Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toylwagon so constructed that the Various parts of the superstructure are rotated in different directions to obtain a pleasing Variety of motion without the use of gearing.
The toy wagon when made on a large scale can be used for displaying advertisements.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved toy wagon; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section thereof with parts of the flies broken away, and Fig. 3 a detail of the slotted bearing.
The letter a, represents the fixed axle, b the wheels, and c the shaft, of a two-wheeled toy wagon. From the axle a project upwardly a pair of vertical shafts d, that extend above the wheels b. Upon these shafts are rotatably mounted a pair of drums or cylinders e, the heads e' e2 of which are provided with perforations of such a size that the drums can slide upon the shafts. The lower drumhead or horizontal roller e2 projects horizontally over the rim of wheel b and is supported thereon, the wheel forming a seat for the drum. In this way the drum is always held iirrnly upon the wheel by gravity, and the vertical rotation of the latter is converted into a horizontal rotation of the former.
The upwardly-projecting end of each shaft Cl is provided with an upright slot d, that forms the bearing for a transverse horizontal shaft g, projecting across the drums. The
shaft g carries wheels g', that engage the outer portions of the drum-heads e', and as the shaft. is vertically movable in its bearingsl d the wheels gf will always bear upon the drum-heads by gravity. Thus the horizontal rotation of the latter is converted into a vertical rotation of the former. The shaft g carries at its center a vane or Afly h, which by the rotation of the shaft is made to rotate intermediate the drums.
Between the shafts d and the ily h the shaft g is embraced by two short rotatable sleeves t', having wheels o. These wheels engage the inner portions of the drum-heads e', so that the sleeves i are rotated in a direction opposite to that of the shaft g. Flies j, mounted upon the sleeves i, will accordingly be rotated in a direction opposite to that of fly h.
'It will be seen that by drawing the toy wagon over the ground the drums e, iiies 7', and iiy h will all be rotated in different directions, so that a pleasing variety of effects in motion is produced.
A toy wagon composed of traction-wheels, a pair of drums in frictional contact therewith, a horizontal shaft, wheels mounted thereon that engage the outer portion of the drums, sleeves surrounding the shaft, and
Awheels on said sleeves that engage the inner portion of the drums, substantially as specilied.
Signed by me at New York city, county and State of New York, this 24th day of February, 1902.
WALDEMAR CHRISTENSEN.
