Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed April 16,1906 Serial No. 312,057.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER II. Con, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in GildingTools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement upon the gilding tool shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 608,106, and it consists in the improved construction of the holding frame for the package-roll, whereby the pressing brush is made removable from the said holding frame so that brushes of various forms of construction may be readily employed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side View of a gilding tool provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 represents a View of the opposite side. Fig. 3 represents a front view. Fig. 4 represents an axial section with the handle broken away. Fig. 5 represents a top View of the holding frame for the package-roll separate from the pressing brush and with the hinged movable plate thrown open.
In the drawing, A represents the pressing brush, B represents the handle of the same, and 0 represents the holding frame for the package-roll; the said frame consisting of the side plates a and b, which are connected together by means of the transverse plates 0 and d, and to the side plate a is hinged the movable plate 6. The side plate 5 is provided with the fixed stud having at its outer end the annular groove g; and the movable plate 6 is provided with the perforation h, adapted to receive the outer end i of the said stud f, and also with the pivoted hook 7', adapted to engage with the annular groove g of the said stud to hold the said movable plate 6 in its set position. Upon the wire it, which connects the ears 7) t of the side plates a and b, is placed the loose tube 0, which serves to form an anti-friction roller and guide for the movement of the paper strip of the package-roll D, which roll is held upon the fixed stud f of the holding frame C. The hinge joint for the movable plate 6 is preferably formed by means of the turned up ears p p of the side plate a, and the integral pintles q of the said movable plate 6. The projecting lips r r of the side plates a and b, are bent inward, as shown in Fig. 2, to form side guides for the lower end ofthe handle B of the brush, and the transverse connecting plate 0 is provided with the set screw 3, for attaching the frame C to the handle. The side plate I) is provided at its inner side with the spring t, which is adjusted for frictional engagement with the side of the package-roll I), by means of the set screw 14. Upon the opening of the movable plate 0, the packageroll may be removed from the fixed stud], and upon loosening the set screw 3, the brush A may be removed and another inserted in its place.
The ears 1) v of the side plates a and. 1) extend beyond the surface of the antifriction roller 0, to form side guides for the edges of the paper strip and metallic leaf as they are being drawn forward from the package-roll to the brush, as shown in Figs. 1 and 22.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a gilding tool of the character described, the combination of the 'llXOtl side plate provided with the stud for holding the package-roll, the opposite fixed side plate, the movable plate hinged to the said opposite fixed side plate, and perforated at its outer end to receive the outer end of the said stud for holding the package-roll, the hook adapted for locking engagement with the end of the said stud, and the transverse plates for connecting the said fixed side plates.
2. In a gilding tool of the character described, the combination of the fixed side plate provided with the stud for holding the package-roll, and having an inwardly bent forward lip, with the opposite fixed side plate having an inwardly bent forward lip and the transverse plates for connecting the said fixed side plates.
3. In a gilding tool of the character described, the combination of the fixed side plate provided with the stud for holding the package-roll, with the opposite fixed side plate provided with the integral ears, the transverse plates for connecting the said iixed side plates, and the movable plate pivoted to the said ears of the said opposite fixed plate, and adapted for engagement with the outer end of the stud for holding the package-roll.
4. In a gilding tool of the character described, the combination of the fixed side plate provided with the study for holding the package-roll, with the opposite fixed plate, the movable plate hinged to the said opposite fiXed plate and adapted for engagement with the outer end of the said fixed stud for holding the package-roll, the transverse plates for connecting the said fixed plates, and the set screw held in the outer transverse connecting plate.
5. In a gilding tool of the character described, the combination of a brush and its projecting handle, With a removable frame arranged to extend at one side of the said handle, the said frame comprising a fixed plate provided With a stud for. holding the package-roll, the opposite fixed plate, the movable plate hinged to the said opposite fixed plate, and means for attaching the said frame to the handle of the brush.
6. In a gilding tool of the character described, the combination of a brush, and its handle, With a removable frame, means for supporting the package roll for revolution, the guide arranged intermediate of the package roll support and the brush, and the ears which extend beyond the outer surface of the said intermediate guide and serve as guides for the edges of the paper strip.
