HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1912.
Application filed February 7, 1911, Serial No. 607,032. Renewed October 24. 1912. Serial No. 727,605.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J AY PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niagara, in the county of Marinette and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hooks and more particularly to lifting hooks adapted to use as roll changers in paper mills.
Heretofore when it was found necessary to change the bottom press roll it was necessary to raise the top doctor and fasten the same in suspended position and it was then necessary to use a wooden yoke to support the ropes which had to be placed around the bottom press roll and adjust them so as to fit properly. Even when this was done and the lower roll raised it was diilicult to prevent it from binding with the top rail. This operation took considerable time and was an extremely difiicult one.
It is the object of this invention therefore, to avoid the difficulties encountered and broadly speaking consists in employing a hook having an offset bend which will accommodate the upper roll.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hook showing its application. Fig. 2 is a rear edge elevation. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents the upper press roll and 2 the lower press roll. These rolls are journaled in suitable bearings in the press and when it is desired to remove the lower one the bearing caps, not shown, are removed and the hook 3 employed to shift the same around the upper roll 1. The upper portion of the are shaped body portion of this hook is projected laterally and upwardly from its side and top wall and terminates in a hook engaging eye member of rectangular formation, which is engaged by the hook 5 on the crane not shown. The body of the hook is formed in the arc of a circle, as shown at 6, the walls of the lower end of the said. member 6 is downwardly and inwardly inclined for a portion of their length, the lower end of said walls terminating in a hooked end 7. This hooked end is somewhat reduced in cross section and is formed to fit the groove 8 journaled in the lower roll. The arc-shaped portion constitutes an offset bend which frees the hook of the roll 1 so that the roll 2 may be readily lifted from its bearings and the crane shifted, whereby the roll may be readily removed from the press for any purpose.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, is
1. A lower press roll changer comprising a single integral member having its body portion formed in the arc of a circle, an eye member of rectangular formation formed on the upper end of said body portion, the opposite side faces of the lower end of said body portion being disposed in a downwardly and inwardly inclined position for a portion of their length, the lower end of said body portion terminating in a hooked end reduced in cross section and formed to fit the groove in said lower press roll.
2. A lower press roll changer comprising a single integral member having its body portion formed in the are of a circle, the upper portion of the are shaped body portion projecting laterally and upwardly from its side and top walls and terminating in an eye member of rectangular formation, the opposite side faces of the lower end of said body portion being disposed in a downwardly and inwardly inclined position for a portion of their length, the lower end of said body portion terminating in a hooked end reduced in cross section and formed to fit the groove in said lower press roll.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses. HENRY JAY PRICE.
