Letters Patent No. 84,97 8, dated December 15, 1868 antedated December 9, 1868.
WATER-BACK I'OR STOVES. AND RANGES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN WILKs, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois. have in vented a new and'iniproved WatefiBack for Use in Cooking-Stoves and Ranges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and'operation. 3 I
I construct my water-back of cast-iron, and provide, at the cold-water inlet B, a partition, A, reaching down towards the bottom, in order to cause the water to passin close to the bottom of the water-back, when it will become heated, and will rise in the body of the water-back above the coldqvater inlet, creating a pressme towards the hot-water discharge or outlet pipe 0, and being prevented, by partition A, from coming in contact with the coldvwater, as in the common waterback, where the inlet and outlet-pipes are on the same level, allowing a portion of the rapidly-foiming steambubbles to pass into the cold-water pipe, and they, be-
coming suddenly condensed, make a disagreeable rattling and jar.
All this is prevented by the aforesaid partitiop A,
shown in the accompanying drawing.
Partition A may be placed at either end-of the water-back, to make a right or left-hand discharge, as
may be desired.
Having thus fully described my-invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The partition A, when placed in a water-back for cooking-stoves or ranges, as and for the purposes specified and shown.
