SAFETY KEY-RING SNAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907.
Application filed October 23, 1906. Serial No. 840.222.
new and useful Improvements in Safety Key- Ring Snaps, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to a safety key-ring snapyand` the object of my invention is to provide a hook which is detachably secured to a portion of the clothing of the wearerfor instance, at the vest-pocket oron the waistband of the trousers-and which hook is provided with a spring-actuated tongue which normally engages against a ortion of the hook to prevent the accidenta removal of the key-ring positioned in said hook.
To the above purposes my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fperspective view of a safety key-ring snap o ,my improved construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig; 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
' The main b ody portionof my improved snap-hook is constructed of a single iece of suitable material, referably brass, t e-cen tral portion of whic 1 forms a plate 1, and one end of the material is bent downwardly into a plane parallel with the plate 1 to form the rear plate 2in the center of which is formed 'the transversely-arranged. rib 3, which engages against the rear side of the plate l. he opposite end of the section of material of which the dev-ice is formed isbent upwardly to form a U-shaped hook 4, the upper edge of the 'outer portion of which hook is beveled, as designated by 5. A pair of` ears 6 are stamped from the plate 1, which ears extend forwardly from saldplate and are horizontally perforated.
7 designates a tongue or keeper, which is of the same width as is the hook 4, and formed integraly with the sides of said tongue are rearwardly-projecting ears 8, which are perforated, and passing through said ears and through the perforated ears 6 is a hin ge-pin 9. Wound upon this pin 9 between the ears 6 is a torsional coil-spring 10, one end of which bears against the plate 1 below the ears and the o posite end bearing against the rear side o the tongue 7. The lower edge of the tongue 7 is beveled, as designated by 11 so as to form a neat fit against the correspondmg beveled edge 5 on the upper end of the hook 4.
The device. so constructed is positioned on a portion of the clothing of the wearer-for Instance, on the waistband of the trousers, by slipping the plates 1 and 2 downwardly over said waistband, and when so arranged the rib 3 presses the clothing against the plate 1, owmg to the resiliency of the material of which the device is formed, and thus retains the hook in the desired position. The
spring' 10 normally holds the lower end ofthe tongue 7 against. the upper edge otthe hook '4, and the key-ring is engaged in said hook by merely pressing the upper end of the tongue 7 outwardly against the resistance offered by the spring 10, and this movement separates the meeting edges of said tongue and hook, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the ring is now dropped into the hook, after which the. tongue 7 1s released and allowed to resume its normal. osition. To
disengage the ring from the hoo the thumb is engaged on the upper end of the tongue 7 to force 4said upper end outwardly and to bring the lower end thereof against the plate 1, and when so positioned the irst finger engages .the key-rxngand pulls the same upwardy out of the hook.
A evice of my improved construction is simple, inexpensive, is easily and firmly positioned onthe clothing, and very conveniently holds the key-ring.
A device of the class described, comprising a plate, one end of which is bent downwardly to form an inverted-U-shaped hook, there being a transverserib formed on the down.- wardly-bent end, which rib projects toward the body of the plate, a U-shaped hook formed mtegral wlth the lower end of the plate, the upper edge of the free arm of the last-mentioned hook being beveled, and a, l In testimony whereof I have'signed my spring-actuated tongue hinged to the front name to this specification in presence of two slde of the upper ortion of the plate, the subscribing witnesses.
lower end of whicl tongue is beveled and l ALFRED C. BINDNER. 5 normally engages against the beveled edge on l Witnesses:
the free uper end of the arm of the U- M.*P. SMITH,
shaped hoo E. L. WALLACE.
